I'm watching the SPS Well Resourced School community meeting for the NW since @thebethocracy is attending this one in person.
I can no longer remember the old hold music before the videos, and I wonder who they get to compose these.
Rocky Torres starting us off where is Bev and her amazing caftans???
Regular opening speech, no closures this year (good as that would be illegal there's a 90 day comment req after proposal), survey coming in September, more information November.
Brent's speech a little different than Tuesday, compares this process to Strategic Plan process 5 years ago, VERY specific about budget crisis and frames "the path of school consolidation" as opportunity for more services
First question (as always), what are your favorite things about your school building? Rocky will share main themes after the 20 minutes of think/discussion at tables
Still waiting on the summary, but this like all the others is really well attended. A hundred people? More? I think more kids than I saw Tuesday, and I see some participating.
Green space/gardens, safety, mix of old and new buildings, art that represents students at that school are the main themes of things that people like. Mix of old and new buildings has come up a lot!
Orange shirts in the audience I *think* are building and maintenance, they are in bargaining now.
Topic 2: How could we make resources and/or services at each school stronger?
Principals are mostly the facilitators, and they always have a fair amount to say about the resources/services in their building. At my table we had an elem principal who wished for more ease of intervening short of the whole formal SPED system.
Seattle Times has a reporter there tonight.
Themes from this conversation- staff for SEL at school, more dedicated counselors at secondary, clear private public partnerships between our schools, city, and community organizations
Final topic- Academic and extra curricular programs
Extra hands up for attention from Rocky, feels like a Quiet Coyote would have been appropriate here.
I wish this third question was first, as since we are going to have to cut it would be good to know what people want to try to save, and by this time in the program people are tired, the public and staff.
Like, we're not going to have to cut building stuff. Our capital budget is fine and capital projects well run(yay Fred). Operations, where academic programs come from, anything not legally mandated (SPED) will need to be looked at.
Final themes: clubs, walk on sports, student choice in programming, sports in elementary, music arts and theater, more volunteer opportunities
Rocky wrapping us up. Same as always. There is no list, but, you know. We are headed that way.
