I keep getting asked what's going to happen with PMC Wagner. My answer usually is "no one knows, not even Prigozhin or Putin", but there are a few things that can be put on the record for the time being, based both on leaks by in-fighting clans, ex-mercs, & phone data (short 🧵)
First, a reminder of the context: at the start of the war, Wagner was not invited to the table. On the assumption of a quick victory for 🇷🇺, generals at MoD and GRU set up their own PMC, both to seize control away from Prigozhin, but also to dip into the (corrupt) funding flows.
The top general who in late 2021 was put in charge of creating the new PMC (variously called Reduta or Zvezda) was Gen. Vladimir Alexeev (yes, the same one who famously sat down to negotiate with Prigozhin on the day of the abortive coup attempt)
Alexeev had recruited Wagner's former "Intelligence chief" and used him as the recruiter for the new, competing PMC. This was Anatoly Karzai, a former Spetznaz lt. colonel who was big in the Russia's bikers' circles.
Naturally, Prigozhin found out about the competing operation and (as reported by two former mercenaries) went to the GRU HQ to confront Alexeev, and threatened his ex-employee Karаziy (typo in name previous tweet) with physical violence .
Karaziy and Alexeev won that battle, but lost the war (literally), as their PMC was decimated in the first days of the war and Prigozhin had to be begged to bring the original Wagner into the war as of end of March 2022.
Back to modern day.. After the final fall-out with Wagner this past June, MoD and GRU tried to recruit as many of Wagner's top commanders and mercenaries into Redut/Zvezda/MoD. However, not a whole lot responded.
The only commander that Alexeev/Karaziy were able to steal away from Wagner after the failed coup was a colonel with callsign Seriy (the grey-ing one). @bellingcat wrote about his role in Wagner, especially in Syria, in 2020: To the (mirror) left of Putin. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
Troshev is now "the Utkin", or the mil. commander, of Redut. And he is now the target of a character assassination campaign by his former Wagner buddies, bringing back a 2017 incident when he was found passed out in the street with secret Syria maps) fontanka.ru/2017/06/06/021/
However, rather than recruiting mercenaries for fighting in Ukraine, the GRU-controlled Redut is reported to be hiring now primarily for overseals/Africa postings. Wagner-aligned channels are accusing MoD of trying to divert resources to replace Prigozhin in lucrative markets.
So the main conflict between Prigozhin and the MoD appears to mostly on the future of "kuratorstvo" of African/middle-east client states (and resource markets), rather than "how to win the war in Ukraine".
Prigozhin (who offered full-service assistance to his "client states", including spin-doctors, psyops and electoral interference as needed) has created some strong local allegiances in Africa, and won't give them up without a fight.
One thing appears certain: insofar as MoD/GRU need to allocate resources - both focus and 000's of mercenaries - to win over Africa from Prigozhin, this is focus and resources unavailable to them on the ground in Ukraine.
(а correction to Troshev's call sign - Sedoy, not Seriy - the gray-ing one, not the "gray" one).

Russian channels report three naval drones attacked the Crimea bridge (official reports claim drones were destroyed), but another drone reported hitting an oil tanker approx 30 miles from the bridge...which may have been the real 🎯?
Indeed, the Sig oil tanker that Russian channels report was hit, was in the right place near the bridge and appears to have shuttled oil between Crimea and Syria, worked for Russian armed forces and was thus a legitimate military target.
Ukrainian telegram channels publish alleged intercepts of conversation of the crew of the Sig tanker; they talk of a fully flooded engine room and an immobilized vessel.
Russian media report that a drone attacked buildings near Komsomolsky prospect 17 in Moscow; traffic down this avenue has been closed. What is interesting is that this address is just across from the headquarters of GRU's cyber offense (incl. FancyBear), among other mil. units
At this location is also the Military University () and several top-secret GRU facilities, including the head of their illegals program. If Ukraine hit that building complex, the symbolic damage to MoD/GRU will be very significant.vumo.mil.ru
Russia's MoD building, with smoke from the drone that Russia says was shot down before it reached its target.
IYMI: @agents_media report GRU illegal Pablo Gonzales, aka Pavel Rubsov (detained in Poland last year) was able to infiltrate the Boris Nemtsov Foundation, befriended its key members and stole and reported to Center data about their activities:
This Kremlin special operation was particularly disgusting, given the Kremlin was implicated in the killing of Boris Nemstov bellingcat.com/news/2022/03/2… and then used a spy to befriend his orphaned daughter, betray her trust and steal data from her.
It's also particularly disgusting as they disguised their spy as a "journalist", tricking reputable international organizations into defending this despicable piece of shit - and endangering the lives of *actual* journalists rsf.org/en/rsf-regrets…europeanjournalists.org/blog/2023/02/2…
FBI indicated Sergey Cherkasov, the Russian illegal whom we had earlier identified as a GRU spy. However, the indictment contains one new proof of that affiliation that FBI seem to have missed. The clue is contained in the passport number Cherkasov used to enter Brazil in 2011.
That passport number is not random. It's part of a series of passport numbers reserved for GRU spies. In fact, it is part of the very first such batch of numbers, issued to many GRU spies in 2009. Every two years, the GRU issues its spies new passports from a new series...
Notable users of passports from this same batch - whose numbers differ only in the last two or three digits, include the infamous Salisbury duo Boshirov and Petrov (*96 and *92 vs Cherkasov's *56), and their boss Averyanov (*21 vs *56).
I have often said this is one of Russia's least intelligent "diplomats". He keeps quoting GRU and troll farm troll account, apparently oblivious he is burning them as he goes along. This one is a perfect exemplar.
The account he burned this time was created in September 2020. It appeared to be an anti-Trump and "slice of Americana" account... Except, it also was interested in that big unknown country that it knows little about, but feels is somehow misrepresented in the West...
Fast forward to thee weeks before the war in 2022, when it is incredibly informed about the Nazis in Ukraine and the history of Russia. And explains to others how Russia does not need democracy.
Loud explosions at Russia's strategic military airfield at Engels, more than 600 km from the Ukrainian border.
Another angle of the explosions. #Baza reports at least three dead, a fire encompassing 120 sq m as of now.
Official RU announcement says a drone was shot by anti-aircraft defenses "causing it to change direction and hit a building where pilots were waiting", killing three and wounding several more.
A Ukrainian drone flying 800 km through Russia undetected - twice - is mind boggling.
