geto suguru and femininity (a thread) Image
1. yin yang symbolism

geto and gojo was created as a duo, each representing yin and yang. gojo is the yang: the color white, heavens, daylight, activity, forcefulness and masculinity. geto is the yin: the color black, earth/underworld, darkness, fluidity and femininity
this is reflected not only in their designs but personality, character arcs, powers etc. they’re complementary in almost every way. an example is gojo’s CT allows him to release energy (yang) and geto’s all about absorption (yin)

this leads to geto being written with traditionally feminine traits such as empathy and care, a graceful and gentle demeanor, being family-oriented and self-sacrificial. it’s a result of his alignment with femaleness, which is, in turn, due to him being the yin to gojo’s yang
yin symbolism -> alignment with femaleness -> traditionally feminine traits

they all come as a package. it’s something that arrives naturally when one sets out to write two characters as yin and yang
2. motherhood

there’s a pattern of geto being connected to motherhood:

It’s also interesting how cursed spirit manipulation can be thought of as a cursed womb, where geto nurtures the curses using curse energy in exchange for their obedience: Image
3. monstrous femininity

as this thread points out:
geto’s association with monstrous-feminine figures, his defection being a reaction to abuse suffered by mainly female characters, the presence of bodily fluids and waste (“like a rag used to wipe up vomit and excrements) all give his character feminine horror undertones
4. kannon

geto can be aligned with kannon - the bodhisattva of compassion, as his mudra in this chapter cover matches up with this heian era kannon interpretation

kannon is one of asia’s (and japan’s) most beloved deities, having the powers to assist those who pray to her. kannon can be depicted as both male and female and later on came to symbolize the divine feminine/mother. she’s also the patron of mothers and is believed to+
be able to grant fertility and aid in childbirth.

kannon’s compassionate nature and ability to save others fits with geto’s righteousness in HI, as well as him using CSM to take in and “rehabilitate” curses (which is probably why the curses are praying to him in the cover)
geto being aligned with kannon can also be foreshadowing for him being possessed by kenjaku, as there’s a form of kannon called fuku kenjaku kannon. Image
(there’s this popular legend of kannon/guanyin where upon realizing that there is still so many unhappy beings yet to be saved, and trying to comprehend the needs of so many through their pleas for help, her head splits into eleven pieces. i think geto’s arc is similar to this)
