Today, I’m going to tell you an incident about MS Dhoni and Brian Lara that very few of you would know.

17 years ago, in 2006, India toured West Indies for a 4 match Test series.

Brian Lara was leading the West Indies and Rahul Dravid was leading India. (2/8)

In the first test, West Indies had a 130 run lead in the first innings and India was battling to stay alive in the contest. India came back with Wasim Jaffer’s double ton.

At one point, Dhoni was batting swiftly so that India could declare soon. (3/8)

In the 151st over, Dhoni was batting on 69 off 51 balls with 6 sixes and 4 fours.

He had hit their spinner Dave Mohammad for 3 consecutive sixes when he tried to got for the 4th one over square leg.

However, he was caught by Darren Ganga at the boundary rope. (4/8)

It was a close one as Ganga was very close to the boundary rope.

The decision went to the TV umpire and Dhoni was given not out as it was not clearly visible on cameras whether Ganga touched the boundary rope. (5/8)

Brian Lara become visibly frustrated and got into an argument with the umpire. But the umpire refused to overturn the decision. (6/8)

Brian Lara came up to Dhoni and said that he takes the responsibly of his team and he can safely say that Darren Ganga isn’t lying.

Dhoni saw this and thought that a legend like Brian Lara won’t be lying. He immediately walked off to the pavilion. (7/8)

The cricket world had not seen an act of sportsmanship like this where a player walks off just by respecting the words of the opposition team’s captain. But Dhoni was special.

This was one of the first instances where Dhoni showed his leadership. Rest as they say is history.
