🔍 Between balance, patience, variations in positioning : How does Postecoglou wants to control the tempo in/out of possession ?
Example vs Bournemouth
THREAD🧵⤵️
In first phase of build-up, Postecoglou strongly relies on two players. Bissouma, thanks to his excellent ball retention, to draw out the press. Porro, in his new inverted FB role, to accelerate the build-up.
I think Postecoglou wants to have a mix between tempo and acceleration.
I have been surprised by how calm can be Spurs midfield out of possession. Bissouma and Sarr know how to position, added to their consequent work to recorder the ball, Maddison ready to receive to initiate counter attacks.
You evaluate the balance of a midfield by the variations in the positioning. With Postecoglou, each move is compensated by another player. When Maddison drops, Sarr usually steps up forward, while Porro occupies centre area as inverted FB.
When you have Bissouma behind your back, it’s easier to make runs into penalty box without having the fear of being countered. Leaving big distance between the two lines doesn’t matter too much when you see those quick defensive runs from Porro and Sarr.
The opening goal illustrates well Postecoglou’s expectations from midfield : sacrificial runs to create space, patience with the ball and not precipitate offensives.
Maddison to accelerate and run in behind.
Alternante between patience and acceleration at the right time.
I appreciate the way Spurs take their time in possession, always in this idea of controlling the tempo. Maddison dropping brings more options in build-up, and Porro navigating between the flank and midfield brings more variations as well.
Bissouma is a precious profile for Postecoglou, because he can eliminate a pressing with his ball retention. Turn around quickly, slowing down the rhythm, and then accelerate with Maddison and Sarr.
Compared to last year, Spurs lacked of interiors jumping into penalty box, forced to stay in midfield. With Sarr’s excellent runs, Spurs can have one more threat in offense, and pretend to score more goal under Postecoglou.
Spurs 2023/2024 looks totally different in many aspects, but the least we can say is we already see first blueprint Postecoglou wants to leave, especially in midfield. Three complementary players, who perfectly manage the switch between slow down and accelerate the tempo.

Why and how Bissouma-Sarr duo could embody the best balance between defense and offense in Ange Postecoglou's system ?
Example vs Manchester United
THREAD 🧵⤵️
First, it's important to differentiate their roles in first phase of build-up : what Postecoglou tries to do is to give central control to Bissouma, with the help of Porro (inverted FB). Sarr replaces Porro's position to catalyze build-up on this right flank.
Bissouma has those responsibilities in defense that will allow Sarr to attack spaces forward (we will see later on). Bissouma embodies the new metronome of Spurs in build-up, even man-marked.

THREAD 🧵⤵️
In first phase of the build-up, Pochettino seems to use Enzo Fernandez in two main situations.
First, when Enzo is on the center. His press resistance is precious especially to counter Liverpool’s strong counter-pressing.
One thing I have noticed : Enzo, as soon as Chelsea correctly oriented the build-up, he automatically runs in direction of forward positions to be ready to receive in half spaces, even like a 10 sometimes.
▫️Same suffocating press
▫️New build-up approach in the first phase
▫️Runs in behind, few passes : efficiency in the second phase
BIG THREAD 🧵⤵️
Some things don’t change between seasons : and Newcastle pressing is still suffocating, doesn’t let any time to the opponent to build-up properly. The fact Guimaraes and Tonali step up to complete the second line of press makes short passes difficult for Aston Villa.
In the press, Joelinton and Tonali had to man-mark Kamara and Douglas Luiz because Villa strongly relies on these two to move forward in build-up. On the channels, whether it be Burn or Trippier, their timing in the press was key to not let any opportunity to create space.

THREAD 🧵⤵️
First, lets say how Hojlund moved when Atalanta didn't have the ball : That triangle shape (usually Pasalic-Lookman-Hojlund) was supported by a another line of pressure, with short distances to avoid short passes from opponent's midfielders.
This is an important point to explain Hojlund's consequent activity in Atalanta's team, which led to some interesting situations in his goals (we will see why).
▫️Eddie Howe pressing strategy and how did he annihilate De Zerbi’s build-up approach ?
THREAD ⤵️🧵
I was talking about it before the game, De Zerbi never betrays his principles of play. For Newcastle, the key aspect of the game was not the press, but the TIMING of the press. Because if you press mate, Brighton can destroy it in two passes.
And the least we can say is that Howe totally understood that, and anticipated many Brighton back passes, the first part of their build-up process. Which means Newcastle players were already in a 5v5 situation, without letting any time for Brighton to pass the ball properly.

First of all, City’s man to man press has been well executed, even if the risks to be crashed by one pass was obvious when you look at how Madrid get away from opponent’s press.
Having in mind this particularity, City’s aggressive press had the objective to literally annihilate any turn around from Madrid creative players, so they can not find Vinicius or Rodrygo.
