Genning up on the history of Green's Playhouse/The Apollo, ahead of a Radio Scotland thing tomorrow (not sure when it's being broadcast), so went digging for this image. A thread...

Opened in 1927, by travelling Lancashire show family, the Greens, who had relocated to Glasgow's Vinegar Hill, it advertised itself as Europe's largest cinema.
Boasting over 4,000 seats, and a luxurious rooftop ballroom, you can imagine Mr Green's face when, just a year later, the 'Talkies' arrived, in the shape of Al Jolson's 'The Jazz Singer'. Time to dump the pianist and pit orchestra, and install a new sound system...
In this pic, it's 1939/40, and the film on offer is 'Invisible Stripes', a crime drama starring George Raft, as a gangster unable to go straight, Jane Bryan, Humphrey Bogart, and a young William Holden.
Meanwhile, up the stairs, you could dine and dance to the Swing sounds of Gloria Gaye, and her all-girl band.
