I think a lot of this has to do with lack of media literacy, but also with the fact that it's so normalized to film strangers melting down in public, despite the obvious ethical issues involved, that we just dont question any of it anymore rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
I feel like I write about this literally constantly but the appetite for strangers having complete public meltdowns is so strong that there is now a not-inexpensive production industry catering to that demand w/ sets, actors, etc rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
The fact that TikTok only prioritizes the most incendiary and sensationalist content doesn't help, but i dont think it's platform-specific so much as social media has caused a systemic erosion of our ability to recognize people's humanity rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
I dont think it's inherently unethical to film someone's bad behavior in public, especially if it's racist or harmful or harassing. but if our appetite for such content is so extreme that folks are making $$ off staging fake versions...that says a lot. rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
To me, the popularity of these videos makes it clear that we're past the point where it's about accountability; if it's fake, no one can be held accountable. it's entirely about righteous indignation and spectacle. rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…

@Grifflotz Ok one more thing. I’ve seen some people say these videos capitalize on misogyny which, yes. I’ve seen others say they capitalize on Black and brown ppls very legitimate wariness of middle class white women which, yes also. Both are true at same time, imho
@Grifflotz Imho the point is less “empathy for the Karens” and more wellllll why don’t we care if things are real anymore
