π§΅1st, 2nd, 3rd defensive lines explainer. Russian/Ukrainian military doctrine.
Defensive lines can be categorized in several ways:
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd - just as you see them in front of you
- security zone, main defensive line, interim defensive line, rear defensive line - according to their designation
- front, army, corps defensive lines
1. The security zone (cover zone, ΠΏΠΎΠ»ΠΎΡΠ° ΠΎΠ±Π΅ΡΠΏΠ΅ΡΠ΅Π½ΠΈΡ, Π·ΠΎΠ½Π° ΠΏΡΠΈΠΊΡΡΡΠΈΡ).
The main purpose of the security zone is to slow down the advance of the advancing enemy troops, to exhaust them with battles even before meeting with the main forces.
In the security zone, natural obstacles are strengthened and artificial obstacles are created (wires, ditches, scarps & counterscarps, anti-tank barriers and dragon's teeth), traps are created, positions are equipped for troops providing cover, and mining is carried out.
The security zone neutralizes the effect of a surprise of attack, giving the defender the opportunity to concentrate the main forces, provide a stable defense and go on the counteroffensive.
2. Main defensive line designed to prevent the further advance of enemy troops that have broken through the security zone, and to ensure the deployment of troops inflicting a counterattack.
It usually consists of 2-3 lines to a depth of 15-20 km in which both army reserves and part of the front reserves (second echelons of the front), as well as withdrawing formations are deployed.
3. Interim defensive line is designed to limit access to the depth of the defense of enemy mobile formations that have broken through, stop (rout) them and serve as an advantageous starting line for delivering decisive counterattacks from the depth of defense.
Interim defensive lines are build between defensive lines of other types: between 1st and 2nd line of defense, between 2nd line of defense and an army line of defense etc.

𧡠At about 4:30 a.m. warehouses with ammo caught on fire at a training ground near Feodosia, Crimea.
π 45.0849143, 35.0749643
The training ground is situated ~250km from the current frontline.
The amount of ammo stored there should be impressive as the occupiers predict it to burn for 24-48 hours. Due to that they're relocating 2,000 people from 4 nearby settlements.
The phase of preparation to the actual shooting took about a week, and most of the time we spent sitting in cars and waiting for something.
By the way, in this camp, the US Sgt came to us at 6am & told us why we're still sleeping, although according to the schedule we're to get up at 5 (no one told us about the schedule, except for the time of departure). We answered that departure should be at 7, so we're sleeping.
π The first two weeks have passed. The next stage of training, movement on equipment. Two Humvees were given to our branch, three M113s to the other three.

We had to learn how to drive it, study it, master the skills of moving in different formations (column, wedge, etc.), dismounting, and so on. If earlier the lectures were held indoors, now we came by vehicle to the training ground & listened to everything in the open air.
The main topic is movement formation. What car and where it should be, where the commander is and how he controls the convoy. What to do during fire contact, or if the car is hit.
π So, I was in a reconnaissance platoon, we're trained by American Rangers. The program was aimed specifically at reconnaissance. There're three main instructors, these kind of enforcers. All three of them were equally square.
Line up at 6 a.m. just to find out that training starts at 9. Why? For some reason, Americans like the rule "Arrive early to wait longer."
The first day, familiarization with weapons. We were told in detail about the M-16, the entire structure and main mechanisms. The class was quite useful, it can be seen that they have been working with this weapon for many years.
Vasylivka axis.
π·πΊ 429th reg. with its front facing east retreated to the south of Kamianske and out of the northern outskirts of Zherebianky. Its forces are inside Zherebianky and in the prepared positions west of the village.
π·πΊ 810th naval brigade (operative reserves in this direction) is now deployed along the Vasylivka-Kamianske road. Convenient place with easy access to both directions of UA advance.
Robotyne axis.
- 2 battalions (BARS-11 & South-Akhmat) deployed near Kopani
- 1430th TD reg. finished deployment near Novoprokopivka
- BARS-14 battalion deployed south of Verbove
- 69th brigade (of the "untouchable" 35th army) is deployed along Π’-0815 road near Novokarlivka
Both sides are using EW extensively, so what? What T-90 and Bradley doing? C'mon, face the reality at last.
Drones are not the future. It's the present that's changing the battlefield. China is miles ahead. With sheer quantity.
This probably need even more explanation.
By "immensely expensive equipment" I mean not only money, but also time it takes to produce it. How many Reapers can you produce a year? What about Leo 2A8? How many can you afford to lose?
