Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy (17 Sept 1879 – 24 Dec 1973) revered as Periyar or Thanthai Periyar was an Indian social activist & politician who started Self-Respect Movement & Dravidar Kazhagam. He is known as the 'Father of the Dravidian movement'.

E V Ramasamy popularly known as EVR, is hailed as ‘Periyar’ by his followers.

He was a demagogue who used the social evils which were then prevalent, or perceived, as a capital for his propaganda. He was neither a rationalist nor a humanist. He was anti-Hindu and pro-British.

Periyar Advocated Nazi-style Anti-Brahminism :

The magazine he edited, published articles praising the ascendancy of Adolf Hitler and warned Brahmins in Tamil Nadu that they should learn from the plight of Jews in Nazi Germany and opt for course correction.

In his 1973 Karikudi speech Periyar Said To Kill Brahmins :

“Wherever we see a temple, we must go inside & break all the idols inside.

Wherever we find a Paapaan (slur for Tamil Brahmins), we must kill and destroy him. Brahmins have done this to us. We must avenge it.”

Periyar and his hatred towards Hindus and Hinduism :

The perception of Periyar as a liberator of women is propaganda fiction :

While EVR is hailed as a great liberator of women, there is barely any evidence of him participating in the most crucial women’s rights movement of his time – the struggle for Sarda Act.

Periyar was virulently anti-Scheduled Communities (SC) :

Periyar would clearly differentiate between SC non-Brahmins and non-SC non-Brahmins. He also made it clear that he identified himself with the welfare of non-SC non-Brahmins.

Periyar defamed Ambedkar by saying he was bribed by Brahmins.

Periyar's hatred for the SCs ultimately, and naturally, started flowing towards Ambedkar, whose stand on India’s national unity further infuriated him.

Periyar condemned Silappadikaram as Aryan propaganda tool :

In a speech made on 30 March 1951, EVR called Silappadikaram, the great Tamil epic written by llango Adigal, as “nothing but a propaganda tool of Aryans”. Condemning Tamil scholars who were conducting a seminar on epic,

Periyar had a love-hate relationship with Thirukkural and likened it to excreta :

Periyar “the economist” said prices of clothes had increased because SC women had started wearing jackets.

Periyar sought the help of the British and Jinnah for his Dravidstan. But both treated him as a useful idiot.

Justice Party, of ‘Periyar’ fame, had supported the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
The reason for the Justice Party’s support for British actions was that most of the individuals criticized by the British Rowlatt Report were Brahmins, including Lokmanya Tilak.

Periyar Termed August 15, 1947 as a day of sorrow.

He wanted his followers to mourn the independence of India.

Periyar could never bring himself to condemn the massacre of landless SC labourers by non-Brahmin land owners in Keezhvenmani, Tamil Nadu.

Who was Maniyammai?

She was born as Gandhimathi to Kanagasabai Mudaliar of Vellore, a member of the Justice Party.

Soon after her father's death, Gandhimathi joined the DK founded by Periyar in 1942–43.

People also says that Periyar Adopted her as Daughter.

On 9 July, 1949, a 70-year-old Periyar married the 32-year-old Maniammai.

This marriage caused outrage and was said to have caused a split in the organisation and paved way for leaders like Annadurai & Karunanidhi to form their own party and fulfil their political ambitions

The breakaway group of Dravidar Kazhagam [DK]
met in Chennai on September 17, 1949, under the chairmanship of KK Neelamegam, at which Anna read out the statement about the birth of the new organization called Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Later Karunanidhi became a close associate of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai & first received broader notice in Tamil politics when he led a 1953 protest in a town where its Tamil name had been replaced with one honouring an industrialist from northern India with a Hindi name.

In 1972, however, a new party, the All India Dravidian Progressive Federation (All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK), split from the DMK. Thereafter, the two parties became bitter rivals and traded terms heading the state government.
