Twitter Minimized Saudi Spy Infiltration, New Emails Show
Exclusive emails show Twitter executives downplayed the significance of a Saudi spy network operating within the company, an infiltration that allegedly led to the torture of dissidents.
2. After the Arab Spring brought unprecedented protest and public criticism of the Saudi Kingdom, the gov began a crackdown on social media.
The effort focused on Twitter, which is hugely popular in Saudi Arabia. SMAAT, a social media PR firm, helped bribe Twitter employees.
3. Ahmad Abouammo, a Twitter employee, accepted $300k in cash & a $40k luxury watch from Saudi agents. In exchange, he illicitly used Twitter's backend system to unmask anon accounts critical of Saudi's ruler, Mohammed bin Salman. Abouammo, records show, accessed 6,000 accounts.
4. The FBI finally cracks down on the spying ring and arrests Abouammo and the DOJ indicts others, including the Saudi founder of SMAAT.
Internally at Twitter, that posed a problem. SMAAT was a major partner, responsible for millions of dollars of Twitter ads & partnerships.
5. Emails I reviewed while visiting Twitter hq show that Twitter executives at the time worked to minimize the scandal, knowing full well about the spying ring and deep business ties.
Twitter attorney Sean Edgett noted the ad revenue from the spy leader & ties to Saudi gov.
6. Benjamin Ampen, another Twitter executive on the thread, noted the "close links between SMAAT and gov orgs/leaders in KSA," noting the need to "minimize" the situation and protect fallout from advertisers.
7. Many Twitter execs wanted even less disclosure. Yoel Roth encouraged not mentioning SMAAT in the company's public statement.
Sarah Personette, a VP at Twitter, suggested editing the statement to “originating in Saudi Arabia” instead of “connected with the Saudi government.”
8. The Twitter public disclosure, published the following month, concealed many critical details.
The "platform manipulation" was simply "originating in Saudi Arabia," the statement read. There was no mention of the spying ring the Twitter knew was central to the effort.
9. There are discrepancies with the disclosure. Internally, Twitter identified 93k accounts tied to SMAAT - leaders of the spy ring - yet the statement noted 88k.
Other email chains show that Twitter officials provided an easy path for SMAAT-tied accounts to be reinstated.
10. Human rights groups allege that the unmasking of anon Saudi accounts led directly to torture.
Twitter spies allegedly identified Abdulrahman Al-Sadhan, an anon gov critic on social media. Police smashed his finger and taunted: "This is the hand you write and tweet with."
11. The effort relates to the murder of Khashoggi. The Twitter spying ring unmasked accounts tied to WaPo columnist's associates. Saud al-Qahtani, mastermind of the killing, coordinated w/the Twitter spies. SMAAT also mobilized its bot network to cover up the Khashoggi murder.
12. "That's part of what's so incredibly sad about the current state of political affairs,” said Andrea Prasow. “That this tool [Twitter] that people saw as a tool of free expression, a tool of organizing, a tool of liberation was turned into a tool of fear and detention."
13. These emails have never been made public before. I obtained them while visiting Twitter hq in Dec. & Jan. These emails were sent during the leadership of Jack Dorsey. Twitter/Musk had no input on my searches or my reporting & I made no agreements w/anyone at Twitter.
14. I previously used the TWITTER FILES to report on the Pentagon's fake account network, DHS censorship of American political speech during the 2020 election, and the pharmaceutical industry's efforts to censor/shape COVID-19 online discourse. This is my latest installment.
15. I'm now reporting independently on Substack. For much more about the Saudi spy network at Twitter and the company's efforts to minimize the scandal, please see my reported piece here. leefang.com/p/twitter-down…

Exclusive -- we obtained leaked high-level internal Israeli gov docs. Emails and memos show effort to influence American policy & politics while evading FARA foreign agent lobby disclosure law. Published in partnership with The Guardian & Jack Poulson. substack-proxy.glitch.me/articles/www-l…
The memos show that the Israeli gov covertly retained Sandler Reiff, the firm of the former DNC general counsel. The Israeli legal advisors settled on developing a third party proxy to channel Israeli gov funds to American advocacy groups.
The secret discussions reached legal advisors to Netanyahu and deputy attorney general. In 2018, given the increased FARA enforcement wave on Trump officials, Israeli gov lawyers warned a new advocacy campaign focused on passing anti-BDS laws could trigger a DOJ investigation.
New exclusive story up today up today. Israeli gov docs and disclosure show expansive efforts to shape U.S. discourse, censor social media, and pass American legislation equating harsh criticism of the Israeli gov with illegal forms of discrimination.
The reporting looks at the Israeli gov-controlled firm "Concert" (now "Voices of Israel") used to wage "mass conscious activities" targeted at the U.S. It is back up and running and flush with money. Gov ministers say they're using it to "go on the offensive" in the U.S.
The Ministry of Diaspora Affairs -- the same agency caught running $2 m fake social media accounts targeting U.S. lawmakers recently -- is also running Concert and funding pro-Israel student groups to monitor/ban American activist orgs critical of Israel.
US & NATO have 12x Russia's defense budget, yet Russia produces 3x the artillery munitions vital for the Ukraine war. How is America so easily outpaced by Russia, which has a fraction of our economy & defense spending? It's partially a story of corporate consolidation 🧵
155mm artillery casings are made at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, which was converted during the Korean war. The plant was acquired by General Dynamics in 2006 during a mergers & acquisition spree, w/ GD buying other artillery munition firms to nearly corner the market.
General Dynamics, after buying out competitors, starting consolidating and closing plants. The Scranton plant had rounds of layoffs in 2010 and another in 2012, removing skilled machinist workers.
U.S. foreign aid money is flowing into Ukraine to fund a network of anti-disinfo watchdogs and journalists, who are helping the government demonize opponents, pass censorship laws, and smear pro-peace Americans as Russian agents. New investigation🧵
USAID funded Ukrainian media are helping Facebook remove alleged Russian disinfo content. The same groups, without evidence, claim Americans favoring a diplomatic solution to the conflict — Jeffrey Sachs, John Mearsheimer, Glenn Greenwald, etc — are Russian propaganda agents
USAID and NED, which spun off from the CIA, openly touts investments in Ukraine media w/ helping fuel the pro-NATO revolt in Ukraine in 2014 & w/ helping win the current information war against Russia today. Yet the “independent” media the US funds is highly political.
DHS official Brian Murphy was in the news for building dossiers of critical journalists. Now he’s helping British AI firm Logically into the U.S. to identify “problematic” 2024 election narratives to scrub social media. I have a new investigation into the censorship firm:
Logically AI scans social media for “misinfo” like many orgs. Unlike others, they partner w/ Meta, anything they flag is automatically shadowbanned or factchecked. They operate a news-style website and are testing generative AI for bots that attack alleged misinfo posts.
In the UK, the British gov gave contracts to Logicially to fight pandemic disinfo. Instead, the group flagged academics & activists who criticized vaccine passports, lockdowns, other forms of policy dissent. Logically said the lab leak theory was a dangerous “conspiracy theory.”
I talked previously to several lawmakers in Congress who explained that devotion to Israel -- including U.S. weapons and money -- is part of their religious belief, grounded in the Bible. This dynamic separates Israel-Palestine from a lot of other geopolitical concerns.
Also interviewed Robert Jeffress, the megachurch pastor who gave the official opening prayer moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. He advises American politicians, says support for Israel is critical for bringing an end times final war, Jesus returning to slay non-believers.
Note Jeffress forced me to wear a mask to go backstage with him. Not my choice. These are clips from Praying for Armageddon, a new film that looks at the role of Christian Zionism in shaping U.S. policy towards the Israel-Palestine conflict. prayingforarmageddon.com
