NEW—Novavax’s XBB15 booster shot is good at neutralizing the current dominant variants EG5 and FL151. Moreover—FDA is poised to soon allow Novavax as a booster first the time even after past mRNA vaccinations: "In discussion with the FDA, we understand a single dose will be indicated for people who have been previously vaccinated irrespective of which vaccine they received, and a two day series… is to be used for those who have not been vaccinated”, says head of Novavax R&D. FDA and CDC approval will still take another few weeks for Novavax.

2) Here, this slide says that the Novavax booster can be used as a “Single dose for previously vaccinated with any COVID-19 vaccine” (ie doesn’t matter if you had mRNA before). This is potentially amazing news if FDA and CDC clears it for everyone!

Several international studies - involving millions of people, mainly from before vaccines became widely available - found a Covid infection doubled the risk of developing heart disease and increased the chance of stroke 1.6 fold.
It was also associated with higher rates of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
"There are a lot of long-term sequelae to Covid that we don't really know yet and we may not know for years," Payinda said.

Gosh—ATTACK RATE of 86% in a 🇬🇧 nursing home outbreak of #BA286 (aka #Pirola) seems extremely high (33 of 38 residents infected). So much for “less infectivity” claims from prior Petri dish studies. Also notable—this nursing home outbreak is a unique strain with 2 extra mutations “not seen in any other #BA286 genomes to date”. We need vigilance on this. #CovidIsNotOver

2) Update—BBC reports “out of the 34 cases confirmed through sequencing, 5 needed hospital treatment.” So ~15% needing hospital seems not good.

➡️Plus, 34 cases of 38 means the ATTACK RATE is upgraded to 89%, instead of 86%.

⚠️Damnit folks--📌DEATHS DOUBLED, 📌HOSPITAL TRIPLED, 📌EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS QUADRUPLED--we are in a sharp surge in ER visits (4x), hospital admissions (3x), and even deaths (2x) due to #COVID19. It's in the damn published data--but NOBODY in the media is talking about this numbers! Why?!?! This data is over 12 days old too--no excuse. We still have super dense folks quibbling if this is a 'surge' or not, and quibbling if we should even test anymore. A sharp 2x rise in deaths, and 4x rise in ER visits nothing to worry about? Don't be a ghoul. Think of others too--have empathy for your family members, friends, and neighbors, and think of their #LongCovid risk too. Each re-infection adds to the cumulative risk of LC, which CDC says LC can last months and even YEARS!

➡️Oh, and @CDCgov, try to put PREVENTION first, not just hand wave about 'having the tools' and merely cheap talk about 'handwashing' @CDCDirector Cohen! Like many other parents, my child also caught COVID early last week, and so I am a very pissed off parent. Stop putzing around--the Biden WH, CDC, states, cities, workplaces and schools all need to take this seriously. And for the love of God--use N95 masks in all hospitals/doctors offices, plus clean indoor air is not political--get HEPA filters & cheap Corsi Boxes in all schools and workplaces. I beg you. #COVIDisNotOver #MaskUp #CleanAirForAll

3) we talk about Paxlovid a lot, which is great, but not always easy to access. Metformin is a relatively cheap generic drug (for diabetes) that has also been shown to be effective for #COVID symptoms. Ask your doctor.

🌀**MEDICANE**—A very rare hurricane/cyclone-like storm in the Mediterranean Sea, due to very hot waters from Europe’s 2023 heat dome, may be emerging this week, that could dump astronomical amounts of rain and cause flooding in Greece 🇬🇷. Extreme forecasts of well over 500 mm of rain (less likely, but some models suggest maybe up to 2000 mm / 78 inches of rain) in 48 hours! (See right graph). Hurricane-level wind gust also recorded already. But the extreme volume of rain could cause severe amount of flooding. #Medicane

🍨SCOOP: Sources inside the CDC are saying that the CDC is starting a last minute new “COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS” on COVID vaccination. Because shots aren’t pre-paid free anymore, some are arguing it should be dolled out/recommended on “cost benefit” basis to hospital system. (Read: Long COVID supposedly not in the equation 🤦🏻‍♂️). There is also internal debate trying to decide the cost benefit for kids too (but school attendance not in equation either 🤦🏻‍♂️). Moral ethics aside—CDC apparently started it late, just a week ago, and now rushing to finish it in the next week or so to present before ACIP meeting. Normally this should take months (way more than 2 weeks), but CDC didn’t get its act together to do this until last week. 🤷🏻‍♂️

(You heard it here first. Don’t shoot the messenger.)
2) to be clear, I am certain CDC will approve the new XBB booster shot for everyone high risk and elderly. The question is if they “recommend” it for younger age groups. But even the fact that they are debating this, without likely considering LC and school attendance in CB equation, is head smacking to me.
