- Reports from 30 states: 162,345
- Estimate for 20 states: 81,502
- Total new cases: 243,847

Today's total is down 3.6% from last week.
A mixed picture this week with cases going down in some states (including big drops in Florida and Texas), while cases continued to rise in other states.
Overall, cases increased in 37 states, down from last week’s 42, while hospital admissions increased in 40, up from last week (39). Deaths were up considerably, the highest since early April, with the weekly average above 1,000 for the first time since June.

WHO is investigating BA.2.86, a new COVID variant with a large number of mutations. Data about this new variant, which is also called BA.X, is still limited. In this thread we'll provide preliminary details. 1/5
BA.2.86 has more than 30 mutations in the spike protein and was first found in Israel on Sunday. Denmark reported 2 other cases the next day, including one person who tested positive a week before the case in Israel. 2/5
Today, a fourth case was reported in the U.S., in Michigan. None of the cases are related which means the real number of cases is higher but how many is not yet known. Testing is limited and sequencing (to identify variants) even more so. 3/5

BREAKING: South Korea confirms H5N1 bird flu after nearly 40 cats died at shelter in Seoul
The outbreak happened at a cat shelter in Seoul which was home to 40 cats. At least 38 have died after suffering from high fever, loss of appetite and other symptoms.
The government confirmed today that 2 of the cats have tested positive for H5N1. Most of the cats have already been cremated so it’s unclear whether any other samples are still being tested.

6 more cats in Poland have tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, raising the total to 29. Of those, only 4 cats are still alive. 1/5
Many cats developed severe symptoms including difficulty breathing, bloody diarrhoea and neurological signs, with rapid deterioration and death in some cases. 2/5
The cause of the unusual outbreak is still unclear. Polish authorities have released only few details in recent weeks after a sample of raw meat tested positive for H5N1. 3/5
