For the past week or so, India has become a target of misinformation, contempt and racist jokes on China's internet for its growing role in Apple's manufacturing network. Ahead of the new iPhone release on Friday, some netizens are calling for boycotting India-made iPhone 15s. 1/
For the first time, Apple will sell iPhones made in India on release day. India now makes about 7% of iPhones while China is still the dominating force in Apple's manufacturing. But India's role will only increase in the next few years. 2/
theverge.com/2023/9/12/2386…
Some Chinese netizens found issues with Apple giving India the limelight. Rumors started to spread that this year's iPhone models have experienced quality problems. A widely shared misinformation claims that the Europe has rejected India's iPhones. Image
The misinformation has a few variations. But most of them are roughly along the lines of this: iPhones made in India could not pass Europe's standard. So China-made ones were sent to replace them and India-made iPhones were instead sent to China. 4/
I could not find any basis for this misinformation. The origin of it seems to come from a blogger/commentator on Weibo. The account's claim includes very specific numbers, stating that only 34% of India-made iPhones passed Europe's quality test. 5/ Image
The misinformation has spread across social media platforms. On WeChat, there are at least dozens of articles and videos repeating or even improving upon this unfounded claim in the past few days. 6/

The claim's popularity is built on a broadly held belief by many in China that India-made goods have low quality. A Financial Times article from earlier this year about high rejection rate of iPhone casings made in India is often mentioned.

What's interesting is that China's state media had previously debunked the rumor that India-made iPhones were to primarily serve the Chinese market. Regardless, new misinformation keeps popping up. 8/

For the past week, many netizens have been discussing how to avoid India-made iPhone 15s. Some even published tutorials on how to identify India-made iPhones and how to return them to Apple. 9/
Image
Image
Many netizens proclaim that they will not buy India-made iPhones. A popular comment on China's Quora-like platform Zhihu says that Apple was politically motivated to produce iPhones in India and that Chinese consumers should let them know this is not okay by boycotting them. 10/
Image
Image
But the discussions have been soaked in a heavily racist tone. A popular joke shared by Chinese netizens says that new iPhones will reek of curry. 11/

Some even wrote that the best way to identify India-made iPhones is to smell it. Others made fun of India-made iPhones being dirty because they say Indian people don't use toilet paper. 12/
Image
Image
And of course, "Ah San" (阿三), the derogatory nickname for Indian people have been used a lot in these discussions 13/ Image
This round of hostility towards India-made iPhones has a few layers to it. Huawei's new phone has evoked a wave of tech nationalism on the internet. China and India's geopolitical conflicts have created a strong anti-India sentiment. And some people just hate Apple users. 14/

For the past three months we at VOA Chinese worked with Taiwan’s
@doublethinklab on an investigate project to expose how China-connected bots were trying to influence American voters on social media, especially X (Twitter), ahead of the election. 1/
We tracked hundreds of Spamouflage accounts on X and analyzed their content. We found that the conflict in Gaza was absolutely the top issue exploited by Chinese bots. They continuously and heavily criticized US support for the Israeli government. 2/voanews.com/a/chinese-spam…
But it’s hard to categorize China’s influence campaign as being pro-Palestinian. These Chinese bots also attacked Washington’s backing of Ukraine. If anything, their goal seems to be portraying the US as a disrupter of world peace. 3/

I recently tested Google’s AI assistant Gemini in Simplified Chinese and had shocking results. On multiple occasions, the chatbot gave answers indistinguishable from Chinese propaganda. On some sensitive issues, it refused to answer at all. 1/
voanews.com/a/google-ai-ge…
Gemini called Xi Jinping “an excellent leader” who “will lead the Chinese people continuously toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

It also told me that the Chinese Communist Party “represents the fundamental interest of the Chinese people”. 2/ Image
On the issue of Taiwan, Gemini very often claimed that the US recognizes Taiwan as part of China, confusing Beijing’s position with America’s. In one answer, it condemned Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island democracy, saying that it “violated the One China policy”. 3/ Image

At least two Chinese dissident accounts on X said they have received what appears to be phishing links disguised as news tips. What they described resembles almost exactly what was revealed about Chinese hacking activities on X in the leaked I-Soon documents back in February. 1/
Teacher Li, one of the most influential Chinese self-media accounts on X, said that he received a link from a user who could no longer access their account. Li suspects that the link was an attempt by the Chinese police to find out his real IP address. 2/
Li also revealed that he had received two other suspicious links in emails. One looked like a link to Chinese video site Bilibili, the other social media app Telegraph. But both had spelling errors. 3/

Netflix’s adaptation of the wildly popular Chinese Sci-Fi novel trilogy the Three Body Problem isn’t released yet but Chinese nationalists are already riled up on social media. They criticize the show’s diverse cast and accuse Netflix of using the story to make China look bad. 1/
The original story was set mainly in China, where a group of humans discovered and took on an alien invasion. The Netflix version moved the setting to current day UK and replaced most of the Chinese characters with an international cast. 2/
Chinese nationalists were especially irritated by the race swaps. One popular meme on Chinese social media targeted Black cast member Jovan Adepo, showing his photo with the caption “one picture to shatter your fantasy about the Netflix Three Body Problem”. 3/ Image

Olga is a 20-year old Ukrainian student who runs a nascent YouTube channel. But lately her likeness was stolen on Chinese social media and turned into an AI avatar who claims to be Russian and wants to marry a Chinese man. My latest:
voanews.com/a/ukrainian-yo…
Here Olga talked to me about how she found out about it.

She is far from the only woman who unknowingly became “Russian beauties” on Chinese internet. Videos of their AI avatars popped up everywhere around Lunar New Year. They all make pro-China comments and sell Russian goods.
Some of the videos featuring Olga have AI company HeyGen’s logo on them. HeyGen is based in Los Angeles but was launched in China in 2020. The company specializes in realistic avatar and voice generating and video translating. Image

People across China have been mourning, openly and quietly, the death of the country’s former premier Li Keqiang. Online discussions of his passing can be found but are very much restricted. Here are what China has been censoring so far, with Weibo being used as an example. 1/
- Li Keqiang’s name is censored, which comes as no surprise as most top Chinese leaders’ names are off limits in online discussions.

- Premier (or Prime Minister) is censored. Not sure if this has always been the case but no surprise here either. 2/

- “Yangtze River and Yellow River do not flow backward” (长江黄河不会倒流), a famous phrase used by Li to emphasize that China will not abandon the “reform and open up” policy, which many believe is not his boss Xi’s vision for the country. 3/
