Congratulations to the Colorado Rockies on their first ever 100-loss season! Just goes to show you, when you combine complete front office ineptitude, with an almost hostile indifference from the ownership, there's literally nothing you can accomplish.
and to do it in our 30th anniversary season, just chef's kiss! Thirty years as a franchise, six playoff appearances, one World Series appearance, no championships. Zero. Haven't won the NL West either. Like, ever. This club is truly broken.
so what of it? How do we fix it? The short answer is simple: sell. But the Monfort's will never do that. This is their cash cow. They open up the gates, and people just pour in, regardless of the quality of the team on the field. Coors Field is a bar with a baseball team.
so we boycott, right? Don't give them money. Great idea in theory except even when the team is garbage, people keep coming. The vape bros will always perform their flip flop mating dance on the party deck, and transplants will always sell out LA, Chicago, St, Louis series, etc.
not to mention the fact that the Monfort's are buying up all the property around Coors Field for an entertainment district that THEY OWN, to keep the cash flowing. For decades.
and whenever the opportunity comes around for a new GM - say when Bridich was outed after the Nolan Arenado fiasco, what do they do? Do they go outside the organization for someone with some new ideas? Of course not. They shuffle the deck. Promote from within. It's insulting.
so on this historic 100-loss night, I'm fantisizing. Imagine this: Stan Kroenke buys a baseball team. Hell, make it the A's. Denver gets an AL team. And Kroenke runs it like he runs the Nuggets, or the Av's, or the Rams, or Arsenal, or any other team that has WON CHAMPIONSHIPS.
go old school with it. Call it the Denver Bears. Or Denver Zephyrs. Break out the old unis and everything. Denver would flip for it, because what's the alternative, the Rox? Fuck it. Try something new. It literally can't be worse. Icing on the cake? First signing: Nolan Arenado
but alas, none of this will ever happen, so I will continue to trot my kids out to a game or two a season, buying the cheapest seats we can, so that they develop a love of baseball. And we will watch and root for other teams, because that's all we're left with.
and when the Rox are good again in another few years, we'll get excited for that brief era of relative success, and we'll root hard for them to win, then watch them not win, and run off all their talented players when they realize the team is not committed to winning
and the whole sad cycle will repeat itself, just as it has for the past thirty years, because this is Colorado Rockies baseball, through and through.

But at least the Nuggets start in a month.
