Today's continuation of #VideoWednesday follows the final line of Looney Tunes videos marketed to children and families, "Looney Tunes Presents". Launched in June 1999 and ended in April 2000.

#LooneyTunes #LooneyTwt Image
This series focuses on the most popular Looney Tunes characters in terms of licensing. Tweety is the company's top-selling character (not to mention he brought in $50 million in merchandise during 1998 alone).
It makes sense that Tweety would launch the line with two videos. "Tweety: Home Tweet Home" and "Tweety: Tweet & Lovely". Priced at $14.95 in clamshell packaging, both tapes came packaged with a flat, cardboard Tweety picture frame, while some came with a plush Tweety doll.
Tweety: Tweet & Lovely contains 10 cartoons and is the more collector friendly of the two tapes. All cartoons are directed by Friz Freleng. It includes...

"Tugboat Granny"
"Tweety's Circus"
"Tweet and Lovely"

"The Rebel Without Claws"
"Hawaiian Aye Aye"
"Birds Anonymous"
"Fowl Weather"

"Greedy for Tweety"
"Catty Cornered"
"A Pizza Tweety-Pie"

In terms of presentation and selection of shorts (including a number of VHS debuts), the "Tweet and Lovely" tape is worth getting. The addition of some fan favorites like Birds Anonymous and their swan song Hawaiian Aye Aye are a nice touch.

*Hawaiian Aye Aye was directed by Gerry Chiniquy.
The last of the two June 1999 releases, Tweety: Home Tweet Home, has a large number of double dips but it contains three new to VHS debuts. All cartoons are directed by Friz Freleng. It includes...

"Red Riding Hoodwinked"
"Dog Pounded"
"Tweet Tweet Tweety"

"Tree Cornered Tweety"
"The Jet Cage"
"Snow Business"
"Bad Ol' Putty Tat"

"Tweety's S.O.S."
"Home, Tweet Home"

Home Tweet Home may not be worth it unless you want The Jet Cage. You can find these cartoons on other DVD sets but it makes a nice companion video to Tweet and Lovely. The first wave includes a total of 20 Tweety cartoons.

The next wave released in October 1999 includes three videos. One of them is Friz Freleng's Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie.

The other two has one completely new video (Bugs Bunny: Big Top Bunny) and a combined reissue of two Marvin the Martian videos from 1998. Image
Bugs Bunny: Big Top Bunny includes 10 cartoons. Half are new to VHS. It is more family-friendly as he encounters mostly animals and monsters. It is also the first Warner VHS to include pre-1948 cartoons.

"Big Top Bunny"
"Tortoise Beats Hare"
"Water, Water Every Hare"

"Rabbit Rampage"
"The Abominable Snow Rabbit"
"Rabbit's Kin
"Foxy by Proxy"

The tape includes the following VHS debuts: Rabbit Rampage, The Abominable Snow Rabbit, Rabbit's Kin, and Foxy by Proxy. It is either worth buying or skipping it altogether. The compilation itself still stands out for its presentation and variety of shorts.

The next tape is a combination of two videos released in 1998 for Marvin the Martian's 50th birthday, also during the Warner Bros. 75th anniversary celebration.

Marvin the Martian & K-9: 50 Years on Earth! and Marvin the Martian: Space Tunes.
Also released in October 1999 is "Marvin the Martian: Space Tunes" (not to be confused with the original tape). It contains 12 cartoons from the two previous tapes. The tape also came in a special green clamshell case.

It covers Marvin's entire filmography with bonus shorts too.

Not too many double dips, but its presentation might hinder with some of the modern shorts in mine, and some that don't feature Marvin does show it. Regardless, Marvin the Martian: Space Tunes is a good video compilation of the previous July 1998 releases.

The last tape may not be on everyone's list but the bonus cartoons add it up to the mandated ten.

"Taz's Jungle Jams". Released in April 2000, it is the only tape in the third and final wave of the video series. Like Bugs, Tweety, and Marvin, Taz is extremely marketable. Image
It is also a double dip of The Stars of Space Jam: Tasmanian Devil including the same six shorts as follows...

Image
Image
Image
It even has the same short from Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales.

Image
Image
Image
According to @gregmethod, there was supposed to be more jungle themed cartoons but plans were averted at the last minute. "The Lion's Busy" and "Nelly's Folly" were considered along with "Bushy Hare". Only these four got released...
@gregmethod "Apes of Wrath"
"Gorilla My Dreams"
"The Lyin' Mouse"
"Dough for the Do-Do"

Image

@gregmethod "Taz's Jungle Jams" is not necessary to collect as you can find most of these cartoons scattered on other DVD sets.

Looney Tunes Presents definitely made its mark in video history as one of the final waves of Looney Tunes theatrical shorts on VHS.

@gregmethod For the next #VideoWednesday, we will expand to an all-week long coverage highlighting the only mail order line of #LooneyTunes videos, and the final Looney Tunes VHS collector set ever made.

Looney Tunes The Collector's Edition, Wave 1 from November 1999.

Happy anniversary to one of Chuck Jones’ greatest shorts, and one of Bugs Bunny’s best, “What’s Opera, Doc?” (1957).

This is truly a groundbreaking short in terms of Maurice Noble's art direction, Milt Franklyn's Wagner music arrangements, and Michael Maltese's writing balancing high-brow classical music to Bugs and Elmer's usual rivalry. It all makes this an amazing cartoon.
It was the first animated short inducted into the National Film Registry in 1992, and was voted Number 1 on Jerry Beck's 50 Greatest Cartoons book in 1994. Steve Hoffman has said on a forum that a 35mm magnetic stereo recording of the cartoon's score has been found awhile ago.

Happy Birthday to Arthur Davis, an underrated director and animator for Warner Bros. Cartoons. He joined Termite Terrace in 1942. He took over Bob Clampett's unit in 1945 until it was dissolved 2 years later. He was one of Friz Freleng's animators. #LooneyTunes #LooneyTwt Image
Davis started as an animator at Max Fleischer's New York studio. He tapped out the famous "bouncing ball" of those 1920s sing along cartoons. He later worked at Charles Mintz / Screen Gems. He later left there with Frank Tashlin for Leon Schlesinger in 1942.
Davis started as an animator in Frank Tashlin's unit up until 1946 when it became Robert McKimson's unit. Also in that same year when Bob Clampett left WB, Davis suddenly took over Clampett's unit.

We honor Mel Blanc who was born on this day, May 30th in 1908. For 52 years, he was the voice of Looney Tunes. His Warner Bros. cartoon legacy lives on as a new generation of talent like Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, and Bob Bergen voice the Tunes in new iterations. #LooneyTunes

Mel Blanc joined Leon Schlesinger Productions in 1936 as he voiced a drunken bull in the short "Picador Porky". He replaced Joe Dougherty as the voice of Porky Pig in "Porky's Duck Hunt" which jumpstarted in his longtime career for Warner Bros. Cartoons.
He gave a lisp to characters like Daffy Duck, Sylvester, and Sylvester Jr. (sped up or normal), a Brooklyn-Bronx accent for Bugs Bunny and Henery Hawk, a dopey voice for Beaky Buzzard, a tough voice for Yosemite Sam, and a high baby voice for Tweety.
