There's a great meeting happening tonight hosted by @jp4all_org and hearing right now from D5 Candidated Cathy Moore talking about how when she was a renter she had access to green spaces, but understands that not everyone does!
Referring to the situation in D5 between Lake City and Sand Point discrepancy in terms of access to green space as "Architectural Apartheid"
#Seattle #Elections #OpenSpace #ComprehensivePlan
@jp4all_org asks which of their priorities would Cathy Moore prioritize and she is saying she'd first address the name and changing the name, sites precedent in the district of renaming a street to bring attention to inequities learn more: cathymoore.net
@jp4all_org She is supportive of Alternative 5 and the most dense plan for rezones in Seattle but also wants to include Alternative 6 aspects in the comprehensive plan. She said she wants to "end exclusionary zoning".

@jp4all_org Hearing now from ChrisTiana Obey Sumner. They are describing their background, and a focus on trans inclusion and justice

@jp4all_org ChrisTiana is also saying they want to tackle the naming first. Next they mention the state level changes for density and social housing PDA. Discussing that the land is protected under open space rules, and that the private nature of how it is administered -- is it public?
@jp4all_org It is city land --- ChrisTiana mentions Social Housing charter -- curious if there's a chance to have it "change hands" into social housing.
@jp4all_org Next question @jp4all_org : how would you get it done?
@jp4all_org ChrisTiana mentioning that it would hopefully take 6 months to change the name --- and then next working towards sidewalk pathways, increasing safety and walkability to light rail, and as part of that "What exactly going on with Jackson Park?"
@jp4all_org ChrisTiana mentions an ecovillage model at Nickelsville and how there could be a fit with Jackson Park and accessible and affordable social housing -- putting this intentionally within "green nature spaces".
@jp4all_org Same Question for other #D5 candidate
Cathy mentions she wants to expedite things as fast as possible, "we can be optimistic ... but then on the ground it can be slow and molasses-like"
@jp4all_org Cathy: renaming is going to take holding community survey, community input, lots of time to change the name, going to be requiring staff from council office, probably would take a year and working simultaneously with the comp plan
@jp4all_org Cathy: need a legal opinion from the city attorney's office around the 'equal park space' rule and that could guide our next steps, how do we move on the 'private' golf course owners and turn it into public usage
@jp4all_org Cathy: it will be a long community stakeholder process to determine (the future) ... there hasn't been enough integration between (the different plans)
@jp4all_org Next Question: What is your comp plan height limit around the stations?
Cathy: Transit station -- we should go as high as possible
@jp4all_org ChrisTiana: We have to make sure that we have two and three bedroom apartments, not everyone can use stairs, people who want to start a family but can't go up stairs, we need (accessible options)-- our city has to be held to ADA standards and compliance
@jp4all_org ChrisTiana: lots of people are stuck in elevators often on police scanner, so we have to be careful; interested in sound and vibration in housing near a transit station as a disability issue
Last question: Any other comments to share?
ChrisTiana: Jackson Park could be a model of a new way of imagining parks and who has access, youth and kids and accessibility -- remove the classist element of having to pay; naming should be done by Coast Salish and Duwamish
Cathy: The parks department doesn't collect usage data, to get usage data, we need to build an argument, we have to have proof of insufficient use, is this a highest and best use -- going to need data; to reforest Jackson Park, adding to trees to 30% tree canopy goals

Share The Cities was founded after being inspired by the push for housing at Fort Lawton to get it approved. The coalition of support that showed up to speak at public hearings didn't continue the work needed to keep up the pressure. 1/?
It has been very confusing to know how to engage in this because it is public land and in a whole bunch of legal nonsense. When a land use matter gets tied up in court, regular advocates with no or small budgets can't hire a legal team to fight,we are left to trust the city...
will do what is needed ... the last Mayor certainly didn't seem to make Fort Lawton a priority, it is good to hear Harrell at least pretending to. What could be done at the state level to prevent this from happening next time? What role does HUD have in this mess?
