Strategically speaking, Gazans want the Israeli blockade of Gaza lifted, and Palestinians in general want statehood, an end to the occupation & an end to Israeli military & settler violence. Hard to see how today’s attacks advance these causes beyond revenge.
The Israeli military response is going to be heavy, and will disproportionately affect civilians as any military action in densely populated urban centres always does. Furthermore it will be supported by a unified population & sympathetic international community.
It’s hard to come to any other conclusion that this new and bloody chapter in the Israel-Palestine conflict will achieve anything other than a disastrous loss of life, and further entrenching the conflict for future generations.
Palestinians are desperate, not just in Gaza where things have been at breaking point for over a decade, but also in the West Bank where the situation has been deteriorating for some time, particularly with regular Israeli operations in Jenin.
Palestinians are routinely being killed as a result of the occupation, with no resolution in sight, and with an international community that has long since lost interest in trying to bring the conflict and occupation to an end. A sustained violent response was almost inevitable.
So trying to judge this escalation by its objectives seems futile, hard to imagine a world in which Hamas don’t fully understand how weak their hand is, and how badly Gaza will suffer as a consequence, yet they took the decision to do this regardless.
The calculation from Hamas seems to be that inflicting a price on Israel and against the Israeli population is worth whatever consequences are to come, and given that there is currently no hope for the peace process, that there is no benefit for them in maintaining the status quo

It’s worth pointing out that many of the same people who have spent 18 months supporting the occupation & destruction of Ukraine because of the existence of the Azov Battalion have spent the last 48 hours cheering on wanton rape & child murder in the name of opposing occupation.
Also the same people who claimed to oppose the fall of the Assad regime by smearing all his opponents as murderous Salafi Jihadists currently defending the most brutal Islamist massacre of civilians since the ISIS genocide of Iraqi Yazidis.
In short, these people aren’t just hypocrites, they are fundamentally evil to their core.
I know I should just ignore it but it makes me very angry when I say that killing civilians is wrong and then idiots who don’t know the first thing about my career reply “these people don’t care when Israel does it”.
Yes I do. I cared long before you even heard of the conflict.
I’m Lebanese. I was born into a pro-Palestine family. I have spent my entire life advocating for the creation of a Palestinian state and opposing the occupation. I am frequently attacked on here for being a pro-Palestinian Muslim.
I oppose antisemitism & murdering civilians for the same reasons I support Palestinian statehood & oppose the occupation. I believe in justice, democracy and human rights. That’s the entire reason I chose to become a war journalist. It’s literally all that drives me as a person.
People like Philip believe they deserve to be spoken to with respect while they spend their entire careers lobbying to make life easier for genocidal dictatorships. They don’t. They deserve to be spoken to like cunts, because that’s what they are.
Guys, I’ve been a freelancer for the majority of my 15 year career. I don’t have a boss. I don’t have anyone to complain to. I’ve worked hard to be able to say what I want, when I want, to who I want, without fear. And that’s precisely what I’m going to do.
So tiny little genocide cheerleaders like Philip Cunliffe can clutch their pearls about my bad language all they want. They rely on academic politeness to protect them from accountability for their fundamentally evil political opinions. Well, I say fuck that and fuck them. 🖕🏽
This article is even worse than Lynch’s, and is written by an outright apologist for the Bosnian genocide. Speaking as a frequent contributor, the insane pivot on foreign policy this magazine is going through is alarming. These articles are completely divorced from reality.
There’s plenty of room for scepticism in media commentary, but publishing authors who clearly have no knowledge of the subject they are discussing purely because they have a profile and a contrarian opinion is propaganda that lowers the entire tone of the debate.
I am disappointed in the direction the NS is taking. If they consider reactionary charlatans like Lily Lynch & Philip Cunliffe to be worthy of publishing total lies on a country neither of them have been to since the war began, then they are destroying their own credibility.
Michael Walker is a ridiculous preening narcissist who knows nothing about foreign policy and has consistently got every prediction on the Russo-Ukrainian war catastrophically wrong, so you can immediately dismiss this as yet more ignorance on his part.
You think a man with this track record would learn to shut the fuck up on Ukraine, but he has no shame, no dignity, and no clue.
Just promise me that when Ukraine finally wins this war, which may still be several years down the line, you will never stop mocking these people. They should never be allowed to forget that they started by dismissing the invasion, then decided to pressure Kyiv into surrender.
Let me just say, I live in Ukraine, and the idea that the Ukrainian people are starting to tire of the war and are seeking to make concessions to end it is so laughable that I cannot understand how anything like that gets published. It’s totally spurious. Ukrainians are resolute.
Every conversation I have with every person every single day revolves around Ukraine fighting this war to the end and liberating its territory, so Ukraine is then free to join the EU and NATO. There’s a reason Ukrainians get angry when people falsely claim the opposite is true.
This is true of the rich and the poor, of the young and the old. This unites people from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Instead of publishing the sick fantasies of genocide apologists from Belgrade, western outlets should instead be listening to Ukrainians themselves.
