Putin just rewarded Netenyahu for his years of balancing act - and proves that the Ukrainians were correct about the self defeating aspect of Israeli alignment for the last 18 months. This should by all rights be a watershed moment for Israel re Moscow.
The Ukrainian government is working hard at this moment to get the Israelis to publicly realign.
Many open questions remain about Russian involvement or complicity or foreknowledge about what happened this week. The Ukrainians are working hard to frame those issues - and as Ukrainian patriot I understand why-
Israel - as everyone has seen - has taken a tremendous diplomatic hit over the last 18 months over its position. Kyiv has begged, cajoled and shamed- for support and weapons -but Netenyahu continued to view the relationship with Moscow as a primary asset (both nationally and for himself)…. And as way to keep the Iranians blocked through Russian intercession. This turned out to be a hollow concept.
What is the point of continuing to publicly ignore the pleas of a Jewish president of Ukraine for help when the so called Russian asset neither helps, constrains enemies or at the very least not backs the enemy in such moments?
