In all these years working on the Middle East & being committed to human rights, I've never seen so much indifference to suffering.🧵 1) The failure of Western policy makers - who rightly condemn Hamas' crimes - to condemn Israel's crimes & care for Palestinian lives is shocking.
2. Equally shocking is the incapacity of many to care. Why are some progressives, who (solely) mourn Palestinians, silent about Syrian lives? Why do many in the West fail to recognise that civilians can't be held responsible for Hamas' acts? Why are some justifying Hamas' crimes?
3) Contrary to what many Western policymakers shamelessly assert, we do not have to take sides. Doing so implies that we believe some victims are more deserving of sympathy than others. The only correct choice is to uphold international law and fundamental values.
4) There is absolutely no justification for abolishing international law. Once more, the fact that armed groups commit war crimes does not justify states committing war crimes. There is no excuse for stripping civilians of their immunity, under any circumstances, never, ever.
