They knew it in 1934. "Experience indicates that marked economies are effected when interconnecting transmission lines are built to tie all generating units and all the consumers of a wide area into one circuit. Without such lines, ... 1/4
"...each generating unit and its market are isolated. The generating unit must provide for a peak load which is much higher than the average load. The interconnecting of many markets and many generating units..." 2/4
"...makes it possible for the peak loads in different uses to offset one another in the course of 24 hours, so that the maximum peak load can be brought much nearer to total generating capacity than in the isolated unit..." 3/4
"...The total investment required for a given standard of service is thus greatly reduced by interconnection, and with the investment the necessary charge to con- sumers is also reduced." (National Resources Board Report, December, 1934, pages 39-40.) 4/4

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2022 is out! @SenSchumer , @Sen_JoeManchin led. We think it can drive a very large amount of clean energy, because transmission is renewable energy's biggest barrier. Importantly, NEPA is preserved, including public participation.🧵
The bill is here, transmission starts on page 76: energy.senate.gov/services/files…
2/
The bill addresses NEPA implementation timelines and implementation, a smoother process for FERC transmission permitting, and cost allocation. 3/

Great @FERC conference on climate and reliability. From Alison Silverstein: “Transmission offers broad benefits in terms of breadth of value creation and frequency of use." 1/14 @TheMacroGrid @CleanEnergyGrid elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/filed…
"We already know that high voltage transmission (HVT) offers huge reliability and resiliency benefits... 2/14
"FERC’s own staff report recognizes, HVT improves inter-regional power transfer capability, reduces delivered energy costs, improves frequency response, enhances the stability of the interconnected electric system, creates redundancy, and aids with restoration and recovery.3/14
