Preliminary analysis by FA, @alhaq_org & @earshot_ngo into the #AlAhli hospital blast in Gaza casts significant doubt on IOF claims that the source of the deadly explosion was a Palestinian-fired rocket travelling west to east.
3D analysis shows patterns of radial fragmentation on the southwest side of the impact crater, as well as a shallow channel leading into the crater from the northeast. Such patterns indicate a likely projectile trajectory with northeast origins.
In reviewing our analysis, investigator & explosive weapons expert @CobbSmith agrees the fragmentation patterns may indicate the projectile came from the northeast—the direction of the Israeli-controlled side of the Gaza perimeter—and not from the west, as claimed by the IOF.
Our/@CobbSmith’s analysis of the crater size suggests a munition larger than eg a Spike or Hellfire missile commonly used by IOF drones. It is more consistent w/ the impact marks from an artillery shell—but w/o additional material evidence, we cannot make a definitive assessment.
This image taken by John Moore in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine in 2022 shows the directionality of fragmentation of an artillery shell - - compared to the crater at the #AlAhli sitegettyimages.dk/detail/news-ph…
Drawing upon available footage, our partner @earshot_ngo performed independent audio analysis of the missile attack, the findings from which lend further credibility to our preliminary assessment of directionality:
Israel has falsely claimed that ‘the IDF does not hit hospitals’. @alhaq_org has footage of an IOF strike on the Al-Ahli Hospital cancer ward on 14 Oct (see image stills), and WHO has reported 59 attacks on healthcare in Gaza and 137 across the Occupied Territory since 7 Oct.
@earshot_ngo analysed the recording released by IOF officials of an alleged exchange between members of Hamas implicating the Islamic Jihad in the attack. They found that the recording was manipulated and therefore not a credible source of evidence:
A conclusive investigation into this attack requires full access to the site and munition fragments, as well as witness interviews. We continue our work on this case, and reaffirm our solidarity with Palestinian people under attack, including our friends & colleagues.

Today we reveal new evidence about the massacres carried out by Israeli forces in the Palestinian village of Tantura after its occupation in May 1948. Our investigation establishes two very likely sites of mass graves—one newly identified.
Bringing together archival photos, aerial images, maps, witness testimonies, ‘memory sketches’, and a new situated testimony conducted by FA with Adnan Yahya, a survivor from Tantura, we reconstructed the village in 3D and identified a further two sites of possible mass graves.
We also created an interactive platform that positions these materials within a 3D reconstruction of the village of Tantura, allowing visitors to navigate sites of violence and survivor testimonies, and observe changes to the village over time: tantura.forensic-architecture.org
This week at #UNAHanau@mimueller/@cdu_hessen said our work on the police response to the 19-Feb-20 racist attack was ‘fully without worth’, & called us ‘charlatans’. Maybe he wasn’t paying attention; here’s a few things the UNA knows because of our work:
It was @ForensicArchi + @counterinv who proved that the video camera on the police helicopter which was flying over Hanau that night was set to the wrong time. Maybe @mimueller doesn’t think it’s important that #UNAHanau knows precisely what time the events of the night happened.
We also showed that officers watching the perpetrator’s front door weren’t in position by 23h03 & left again at 23h21. Even though the officers said they were there around 22h30-45. Maybe @mimueller doesn’t think it’s important that the house went unsurveilled for so long.
NEW Investigation by FA and @alhaq_org's FAI Unit into the 11 May extrajudicial killing of Shireen Abu Akleh uses previously unseen footage provided by @AJArabic and advanced spatial and audio analysis to reveal conclusive evidence. Full investigation: bit.ly/3SiDZLh 1/9
#1. Shireen and her colleagues were clearly identifiable as press. Our field of vision analysis simulating the view from the IOF marksman's rifle scope both optically and digitally shows the legibility of the journalists' 'PRESS' vests as they were targeted. 2/9
#2. Shireen and her colleagues were deliberately and repeatedly targeted. Our analysis of the shots' impact points confirms their close proximity to one another, indicating precise and careful aim. All shots were fired above the shoulders, revealing an intent to kill. 3/9
Today we publish our latest, months-long investigation with @counterinv, an interactive cartographic platform that archives, verifies and maps over 1000 ‘drift-backs’ in the Aegean Sea: aegean.forensic-architecture.org
‘Drift-backs’ are a new mode of expulsion at the edge of the EU that weaponises the geography of the Aegean to deny asylum seekers access to safety. Intercepted in GR waters and islands by @HCoastGuard, they are left adrift on life rafts, back to Turkey.
To evidence this practice, we collected, verified, timestamped and geolocated thousands of images, videos, and GPS locations sent by asylum seekers to monitors like @alarm_phone and @ABoatReport, or taken by the Turkish CG during their ‘rescue’ operations.
FA is pleased to announce its first collaborative investigation with @CST_echo. Just over 3 months since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we present a detailed analysis of one of the first symbolically significant events of the war, the Russian missile strike on the Kyiv TV tower.
Russia's strike on the Kyiv TV tower was not particularly effective militarily—but the significance of targeting the capital city’s main television and radio tower cannot be underestimated in a war as much about control over narrative as over land and the people inhabiting it.
The missiles targeting the TV tower also landed on Babyn Yar, the site of one of the worst massacres of the Holocaust—ironic given the oft-invoked Russian talking point about the ‘de-Nazification’ of Ukraine as justification for the invasion.
