1/ For those who can't understand the "dysfunction" of the House GOP, you don't get it. This isn't dysfunction in the minds of the far-right MAGA members: it's their goal. Discredit government/governing altogether bc they never believed in it really...🧵
2/ The far right believes government should be shut down bc they don't believe in public service, the public interest, or probably 95% of what government does (from environmental protection to education funding to anything other than tanks, guns & weapons)...
3/ And to make the governing body itself fall apart fits perfectly w/their desire to discredit elections as fraudulent even in the absence of evidence. It breeds cynicism. What good is democracy anyway? What good are elections? What's the point of civic engagement?...
4/ This is all authoritarian playbook 101. Make most people so fed up with the idea of elections & elected officials that they just disengage from politics, all the while knowing your own hard core culture war bigots, Christian nationalists, etc. will never disengage...
5/ This way, they win, not bc most people support them but bc their minority of a minority stays active (because of Jesus or something) while less ideological people just give up in frustration. What's happening in the House is not failure to the far right. It's deliberate...
6/ Chaos is not a glitch for them, it's a feature, designed to get the rest of us to throw up our hands in disgust. Just like their war on text/library books and classroom lessons was to discredit public education broadly...in honest moments, they admit as much...
7/ Folks need to stop acting like these people believe in anything, or really care about policy. They do it all "for the comms" as former Rep Madison Cawthon once admitted: to get on TV or go viral w/some rant about Biden, trans folk, the border, etc...
8/ While that comms-driven strategy doesn't get anything actually accomplished, it guarantees these people get re-elected by the cultists in their districts. So it's great job security for more comms-driven efforts. Wash, rinse, repeat...
9/ Government & public service is for suckers to these people: for people who couldn't make it as hedge fund managers or whatever. So even though they went into government work as elected officials, they never really believed in it. It was about power, getting on TV, etc...
10/ In the era before 24-hr news cycles, most of these more recently elected members wouldn't have even run for office. You think Matt Gaetz would have wanted to be in Congress in the 70s/80s? Hell no...no FOX or Twitter. What fun would that have been?...
11/ Treating the modern GOP as a real political party is a fool's errand. It should have been obvious when they decided they didn't even need a platform anymore: basically just "MAGA, Trump and trigger the libs for the lulz."...
12/ These are not grown ups. They are kids who've been given the keys to the car despite not having even taken the training wheels off their bikes yet. They can't steer, or brake, or anything else. Sadly, they like it that way. And that's why we're in this place. END

1/ Serious question for people who are convinced they KNOW FOR SURE who bombed the hospital and that it was the evil side they oppose: if absolute proof came out that it was the side you support, would you apologize for being wrong? No, right? That's cult shit, either way...
2/ It could definitely have been Israel, and it could have been Hamas. And whoever did it is guilty of yet more war crimes. And Israel is guilty of horrific, genocidal collective punishment and state terrorism, and Hamas is guilty of vile anti-Jewish bigotry and terrorism too...
3/ ...but the fact that people reflexively posted with certitude what they thought happened, well in advance of the evidence, proves we're not dealing with facts here. We are dealing with people's priors: side x or y is evil and thus they will view all stories through that lens..

1/ Israel's premise was that it would be a refuge where Jews would be safe. Yet today it is far less safe for us than anywhere on Earth. Who could have known that taking other people's land, discriminating against them and treating them all like terrorists might not work out?...
2/ This is not to justify what Hamas just did; not in the least. It is simply to say that even if something is not morally justified it can be practically predictable. People will often do destructive things, even self-destructive things, to gain freedom and opportunity...
3/ particularly when other avenues appear closed and nothing else has worked, and as they watch more and more of their land and liberty taken, and public opinion increasingly calling for their complete expulsion or extirpation (which it has been in Israel for some time)...

White America has never thought racial oppression was real. Most whites rationalized enslavement, lynching & segregation. Dr Samuel Cartwright (a respected physician) said it was "drapetomania" that caused enslaved persons to seek escape. Because slavery was, ya know, benign 🧵
2/ At no point in history has White America writ large opposed racial discrimination and oppression when it was happening. Oh sure, 100 years after enslavement, everyone would say how bad it was. Most said the same about segregation by the 80s or 90s. But at the time, crickets...
3/ That tells you a lot. If you can look at enslavement, lynching, and overt open racial hostility and mistreatment -- systematic oppression -- for generations and say nothing (and do less), your progeny won't likely see it today. Because you taught them what to care about...

If you actually believe the reason your taxes are too high is because of "welfare" cheats eating fudge rounds on your dime, you are clearly in need of a Google machine. Not that songwriters are expected to be social scientists, but this is just plain ignorance.
I mean, just as one data point, there are only 464,000 adult recipients of cash "welfare" in the entire country. Most families receiving any cash receive it only for the child(ren) in the home (average of 2 btw, contrary to popular belief)...
and families receiving assistance get, on average, about 500 bucks a month. Not the reason your taxes are too high. Not by a long shot. Total expenditures on cash aid is a miniscule fraction of the budget

The @tnhousegop priorities prove that these people are trolls whose only goal is to "own the libs" and rile the base. A 🧵

1. They punished Nashville for being a Blue dot in a red ocean, dissecting our congressional district so a 60/40 Dem city can't have a Dem in Congress...
2. They punished us again for not wanting their stupid MAGA/GOP convention in 2024, by pushing thru a bill slashing the size of OUR council and proposing an end to Mayoral runoffs so a Republican could win in a 4-person race with as little as 30% of the vote...
3. They initially sought to rename part of John Lewis Way after Donald Trump, in a blatant smack in the face to the civil rights legend whom Trump despised and insulted directly before his death with false claims about Lewis's district being "crime infested."...

1/ People trying to make the Covenant School shooting into proof of trans mental illness are vile and ignorant. The shooter may well have been mentally deranged. But gender dysphoria was not the "illness" that prompted mass murder. There is NO link between that and violence...
2/ And it's interesting that the very people who normally talk about how we need to do more to address mental illness after shootings like this are offering NO real solution now that they think the illness in question was gender dysphoria...
3/ Because what would they have us do with people who are trans, exactly? Well, we know: send them to conversion therapy, fundamentalist Bible camps, Christian counselors, scream at them about Jesus, or maybe just lock them up...
