Tl;dr: I was shot at today
Today I lost my innocence. For the first time in my life, someone shot at me, and I was afraid I wouldn’t come back home. He wasn’t a Hezbollah or Hamas operative, but a settler who didn’t want me documenting them destroying a Palestinian's farmland Image
Yesterday, I came to the village of At-Tuwani in the South Hebron Hills to stand in solidarity with my Palestinian friends. Settlers wearing army uniforms have been taking advantage of the war - while all eyes on Gaza - to take over more land that doesn’t belong to them. Image
They’re cynically exploiting the situation to advance their own political goals – during a moment when thousands, including my own brothers, have been called up for duty, and while I’m still mourning a friend who was murdered.
This incident started when a settler came with a bulldozer to destroy a garden on the private farmland of a family I know in At-Tuwani. It wasn’t their first time trying to destroy this garden. It pained me to see how he tore apart this beautiful garden I’ve visited many times Image
Settlers are exploiting the war in order to do whatever they want. Armed and wearing uniforms, they are becoming the law since there’s no one who will stop them. It scares and sorrows me that the man who shot at us will in all likelihood not be arrested by the police. Image
I'm afraid. Afraid for myself and even more so for the lives of Palestinians who are having to endure this and worse.
But in times like these I cannot allow myself to look away from what is happening in the West Bank. Don’t close your eyes - lives depend on it.

On police, the IDF, and the messianic settler ideology 🧵

Last week, I and about 40 other volunteers went to Hebron to help Palestinian families harvest in Tel Rumeida. For years, settlers have prevented them from harvesting their ancient olive trees with threats and violence.
For over a year, the families in Tel Rumeida have been under an unofficial curfew imposed by settler-backed security forces. They are afraid to leave their homes, and going in and out of the neighborhood is near impossible due to the many checkpoints that open and close randomly
We were also blocked, because we came to express solidarity with the families.

We received a restricted access order as soon as we arrived in Kiryat Arba, an order that allows the army to block leftist Israelis and allow movement only for settlers or those the settlers approve. Image

Yesterday I was in Zanuta again, a small village in the South Hebron Hills. I was there two weeks ago, too. It was an optimistic moment: the villagers, who fled in late October due to daily settler violence, slowly began to return. That optimism however, was short-lived. 1/6 Image
It pains me to see these residents pack up and leave again. Their children won’t go back to study in the school that settlers destroyed, their herds won’t graze in the surrounding plots. This daily violence would not be possible had it not been fully backed by the state. 2/6 Image
The residents had only just returned last month because a High Court ruling required the state and the IDF to protect them. So there was a ruling. So what. Since their return, they’ve been subjected to daily settler violence, without the army or the police lifting a finger. 3/6 Image
