Mike Johnson and Democracy.

A 🧵

A few years ago, now-Speaker Mike Johnson said we do not live in a democracy. It’s a common right-wing refrain.

But the truth is, in HIS political career, he has not participated in a democracy

He is actually the perfect example of how..

1/
…in today’s gerrymandered world, people can ride to the highest levels of power without being in a real election their entire careers.

Which means they can be complete extremists and never face accountability for it.

Johnson’s career is the perfect example of this. 👇

2/
Before entering office, he spent his years fighting right-wing causes as a lawyer. Which is his right to do.

But then his political career began.

In early 2015, when the state rep where he lived ran for another another office, Johnson ran for the vacancy.

3/
Incredibly, that first run for office was unopposed. There wasn’t even an election

He assumed power without ever having faced the voters in a general election

No wonder he thinks we’re not a democracy!

Once in office, he got to work on his extremist agenda, pushing a law…

4/
…that even Republicans rejected, and was tabled 10-2 in committee.

What did the voters think about the fact that in only months, he had already proven to be too extreme for even his own party?

We don’t know, because Johnson ran again that Fall for election…

5/ Image
to the next 2-year term, and again, ran unopposed

No primary.

No general.

How easy? Pay the filing fee, get some signatures. And he gets to come right back to the legislature with no accountability to the people whatsoever.

No wonder he doesn’t think we’re a democracy!

6/
On the strength of his unopposed election victories—on that unmistakable mandate from a people who had no choice in the matter—Johnson decides it’s time to run for Congress.

And then he encounters the marvels of lopsided districts.

He wins in 2016, 2018 and 2020…

7/
…with the winning margins we have come to expect in a gerrymandered world.

30% (2016)
30% (2018)
35% (2020)

And then in 2022, back to his roots, he runs unopposed.

No wonder he thinks we’re not a democracy!

8/
Bottom line: the now-Speaker of the House is the perfect example of the modern extremist

He’s spent his entire career in a world devoid of democracy, and of no accountability

It’s how he entered—his initial entree unopposed (that’s pretty rare, actually. Not even a primary)

9/
It’s how he rose.

It’s his most recent race.

It’s all he’s ever known!

And it’s how all the unabashed and toxic extremism he’s espoused along the way has essentially gone unchecked the entire time.

10/
Of course these guys are going to be extremists when they thrive in a world where they CAN be extremists, & never face any real opposition (often no opposition at all) despite extremism that only a few years ago was soundly rejected by his own party

Mike Johnson IS the..

11/
current generation of GOP leaders.

No accountability—ever! Which means all the incentives they face encourage them to keep being extreme.

And none of this will end until we do two things.

One…end gerrymandering. It’s poisoning everything by removing almost all…

12/
…accountability from politics.

It’s fueling the insane and extremist behavior of the House and so many of the American statehouses that are careening out of control.

Two…run everywhere!!

Johnson is not a rare case. We have a crisis of unopposed extremists..

13/
like him everywhere.

Democrats focus so much on a few swing states we have decided it’s OK to let the Mike Johnsons of the world, or the Tennessee Republicans of the world, or the book banners, or the abortion banners (no exceptions) , and so on, do all they’re doing…

14/
…in statehouses, and not even face opposition in elections that follow their extremist actions.

Just look at these charts:

80% unopposed in Louisiana!
48% in Tennessee!
43% in Arkansas!
42% in Texas!

On and on. Unopposed!

15/
Image
Image
They’re running their extremist agenda through these statehouses, through these districts, and we just let it happen.

Countless, unopposed.

Doing untold damage to lives, communities, and democracy itself.

And rising to offices as high as Speaker of the House. And we

16/
…largely stand to the side and let it all happen without an iota of accountability or opposition.

Not even a door knock saying: “did you know that friendly, bespectacled state rep of yours is actually a total extremist?”

Mike Johnson is the epitome of that current…

17/
…generation of right-wing extremists

And his career path a perfect example of HOW they are rising all over—rewarded for extremism—through a system of rigged districts and a collective decision that running against these people at those levels doesn’t matter.

18/
Look around at what’s happening to this country and tell me it doesn’t matter!

We have to start running everywhere, folks. Bringing accountability everywhere. Until we do, all this will keep happening.

Mike Johnsons and Jim Jordans and MTGs will keep emerging everywhere,

19/
Along with hundreds of others like them in statehouses we will never hear of, we will not run against, but who will be doing great damage every step of the way, while rising through the ranks.

20/
By the way, there IS a way to run everywhere

It starts with showing people we value people running everywhere.

How do we do that? We crowd-fund support to candidates running against the Mike Johnsons of the world, in tough districts

In Ohio, we started this.

21/
We call it Blue Ohio. It’s starting to work.

If we don’t start running everywhere, our future will be Mike Johnsons doing damage in states across the country, and Mike Johnsons rising to the..

…highest offices in the land, without ever experiencing democracy any step along the way.

And that continues to be dangerous as hell to our country.

END rant.

A Breathtaking Letter

A must-read🧵

“Dear School Parents…”

The letter starts innocently enough. A letter from a school official to that school’s parents, announcing some big news.

But within a few sentences, the content will take your breath away.

It did mine:

1/
“The recent approval and expansion of EdChoice is a tremendous boon to our school families and Catholic education across Ohio. While its implementation will be a challenging process, we are abundantly blessed by the opportunities and savings it presents for all of us.”

2/
As if the “savings” emphasis was not already clear enough, the letter doubles down: “most families will be saving more money than ever on their child's Catholic education at [X school].”

The author next encourages all families to seize that cost-saving opportunity:

Two Years! What a Journey

A 🧵

In April 2021, exasperated with the lawless shenanigans of the Ohio Statehouse, I got on Twitter and typed words to the effect that Columbus politicians were acting like a “Laboratory of Autocracy.”

But I never sent the tweet.

1/ Image
I stared at the words for a few seconds, and thought: this is bigger than a tweet.

So I deleted the draft tweet, and started writing an op-ed instead.

About how statehouses were doing untold damage to democracy while everyone watched events in D.C.

2/
That statehouses were the front line in the attack on democracy, and that if we didn’t start focusing on them, the right’s attack on democracy would continue to succeed.

But the op-ed just kept getting longer. I dove deeper. Did more research.

Sore losers and suckers.

A 🧵 .

I am not a Congressional insider, and I spend most of my time worrying about states.

But I have to say this Jim Jordan fiasco is such a window into how election denialism impacts everything, including the Republican caucus.

Think about it:

1/
One Republican yesterday actually explained this well.

How rogue the Jordan effort really is.

That Republican reminded me of something we all have known—that the way it usually works is that whoever wins the majority caucus vote for speaker, wins the Speakership.

Why?

2/
Because those on the losing side of that majority Caucus vote have always agreed to accept that election loss, and then together vote for the winner when the entire House vote for who the speaker takes place between all the members of both parties.

NEW VIDEO/BOOK

What’s it like to fear your life one moment, then, days later, find yourself bombarded with rumors and public doubts about what “really” happened?

That’s exactly what happened to me in an incident 21 years ago today.

WATCH, RT and follow the 🧵..

1/
All of it runs so deep still, I decided to write a novel about it.

“The Fifth Vote” captures what it feels like to be in that situation, in a car for an hour at gunpoint, and in the public eye later, w rumors circulating about what “really” happened, or how it can’t be true

2/ Image
To be clear, this is a novel.

While the incident is real, and is described in a way that mirrors most of what happened, the plot that follows the incident is pure fiction, as are the characters throughout the book.

But we’ve got work to do to make sure Issue 1 passes over the next 22 days. And the other side is pulling out all the stops!

Do whatever you can to help, & get others to help too.

We need your help every day to win this thing…to overcome all the obstacles they’re throwing at us

We protected democracy in Aug. because so many got involved and did the work. It was electric ⚡️

NEW WHITEBOARD

Voting has begun in Ohio & other states. It will start soon elsewhere.

And I have a confession: there are all these yard signs for school board candidates, and I have no idea who they are.

And that turns out to be a huge risk.

Why?

WATCH, RT &

1/
There is a stealth campaign, backed by big money, to take over school boards around the nation with the same extremism that has so poisoned our statehouses.

And they’re hoping to succeed by staying under the radar.

What’s my advice to stop it?

Get out your radar!

2/
And commit that before you vote, you will know exactly who is running in your school district election.

I’ve provided a number of links on how to do this research, easily, here:
