I've always wanted an immediate ceasefire in every round of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians in the last 20 years. However, like almost the entirety of the Israeli left, we think that a ceasefire is not an option. If you are interested, here's why:
1. There is no way to curtail Hamas without military action. This idea, wherein gradual cooperation with Hamas may be built using diplomacy or withdrawals, was simply proved wrong.
2. Israel cannot continue to exist with an Iran-proxy ISIS-like religious fundamentalist organization sworn to kill all of the Jews in Israel--that continues to amass military power which allows it to do what it intends to do.
3. There is no hope for peace between Israel and Palestine while Hamas continues to amass power. Without its continual suicide bombings, there would have been peace circa 1996, following the Oslo Accords. Without Hamas, Gaza would thrive after Israel has left it.
4. The hypothesis that Hamas cannot be curtailed militarily is likely wrong. Because Israel is unlikely to continue to exist as a relatively liberal, prosperous country without curtailing Hamas--it will likely fight like the Ukrainians, but with a military advantage.
This does not mean that the life of Palestinian children doesn't matter or that we trust the government to conduct an accurate military mission. This is why I think the effective thing the world can do is help Israel and Palestine remove Hamas carefully, lawfully, and completely.
And if people are wondering, I think the West Bank is a very different story and almost orthogonal to Gaza. Completely different distributions of moral blame and different types of solutions. Harsh criticism of Israel and activism on that front is completely justified.
