Last year, I returned to Gaza to visit my family after 16 years in exile. During my stay, I captured numerous photos. I aim to share them here in a thread to demonstrate that Gazans embrace life with passion and resilience. They have their own cuisine and cherish their moments of joy. It's not just about conflict and loss. We yearn for the return of our normal lives, our freedom, our land, and equality.

THREAD 🧵 on the Dynamics of Change in the Arab Public Opinions
Since 2011, the argument has been that the Palestinian issue had become marginalized among Arabs, particularly the Arabic youth. This shift was attributed to the prevalent political and economic challenges of the time. However, the situation underwent a dramatic transformation following the Israeli war on Gaza. 1/9
As one Palestinian academic astutely remarked, "What the Palestinians needed a century to impart to Arab youth, Israel accomplished in just three weeks." A journalist echoed this sentiment by stating, "Gaza enabled us to reclaim an entire generation." This remark suggests that the current and forthcoming generations had seemingly lost their connection to the Palestinian cause, but the impact of this war served as an awakening and realignment, according to these observers. 2/9
This month, the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies published its findings on Arabs' perception of the ongoing war in Gaza. The results are quite revealing and demonstrate that the Palestinian issue has once again become a central concern for the Arab world. Notably, Iraqis have re-emphasized their strong support for the Palestinian question and the conflict, which had diminished after 2003. Likewise, Libyans and Saudis are also showing a renewed interest and a shift in dynamics regarding this matter. 3/9

🧵 THREAD: Why Defeating Hamas and Other Palestinian Groups Militarily Seems Not Possible.
This is my last thread for 2023. I hope next year will bring more peace to the world, especially for the people of Gaza. This thread is based on my observations, readings, and knowledge of the groups, geography, and society.1/12
This is the first instance of live guerrilla warfare we've ever seen. Hamas and other Palestinian groups are uploading new videos daily, showing their direct engagements with Israeli troops. This suggests that they are more composed than in the first three weeks and have reestablished communication with their central command. After almost 90 days, maintaining strong communication with the central command indicates that these groups are more organized than we initially thought 2/12
Hamas, like many non-state militant groups, engages in asymmetric warfare. This means they do not engage in conventional battles against well-equipped armies but instead utilize guerrilla tactics and unconventional methods. The significant destruction of buildings in Israel has, to some extent, aided Hamas militants by providing cover and opportunities for unexpected attacks against Israeli forces 3/12

ThREAD 🧵
As a Gazan with 15 years of research on Hamas under my belt, I address the question: Can Hamas be eliminated? The straightforward answer is no. The methods Israel is using are unlikely to completely dismantle Hamas. Recent polls suggest a surge in support for Hamas in both Gaza and the West Bank, but this portrayal warrants skepticism and calrifications. 1/12
During my visit to Gaza in 2022, it was evident that the locals were dissatisfied with Hamas's governance. They desired change, but not a return to the Palestinian Authority and Fatah. What they sought was a partnership that embraced democratic governance and the rule of law. This sentiment, however, doesn't translate to an outright rejection of Hamas as a resistance movement. Despite resenting Hamas for 15 years of alleged control and corruption, not all Gazans want to see them gone. According to the Arab Barometer in 2022, approximately 23% of respondents expressed significant trust in Hamas, whereas 52% reported having no trust whatsoever. It's crucial to note that this lack of trust extends to other political entities in the region, including Fatah. 2/12
Many of the Palestinians in Gaza who were critical of Hamas distinguished between its military resistance and its governance of the Gaza Strip. Essentially, they supported the resistance against the occupation by Hamas and other factions, but not necessarily the way Hamas administered civil affairs.
This distinction is reflected in the statistics: 37% of Gaza residents disagreed with the actions taken on 7th October. Yet, a majority—56%—believe that armed struggle is the only path to an independent Palestinian state and the end of the occupation, marking a rise from 50% in September 2023. 3/12
