In the latest development today, the UK government has announced it will back its commitment to new oil and gas ahead of the king's speech.

This flies in the face of science and binding climate targets 🧵
theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/n…
The UK simply can't be a climate leader with this approach. This will lock the UK into expensive and polluting forms of energy while making it harder to meet its legally-binding emissions reduction targets.
Allowing multinational oil and gas companies to drill for more gas in the North Sea will do nothing to bring down household energy bills, nor help UK energy independence and security.
The UK needs more clean energy investment to create long-term green jobs, with the renewables transition fast underway, and it needs the right policy signals to attract that investment, or risk falling behind.
We're already challenging the gov’s existing climate plan on the grounds that it cannot be relied on to deliver the UK’s carbon budgets. Any reduction in the overall strength of the government’s policies means the UK falls further behind what the Climate Change Act requires.
We will continue to keep a close eye on further developments to see how they affect the UK’s compliance with its legal obligations.

BREAKING: We’re supporting legal action against Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Danone for misleading claims about recycling.

With @ecos_standard, we’re supporting @BEUC in filing an external alert to the EU Commission. #deplastify

🧵(1/4)clientearth.org/latest/latest-…
The external alert argues that the companies’ use of the terms ‘100% recyclable’ and ‘100% recycled’ on plastic water bottles sold across Europe is misleading and an infringement of consumer protection law. (2/4)
Recycling is a better disposal alternative to incineration or landfill, but can never address the scale of the plastic pollution crisis. Only 9% of plastic ever made has been recycled – and production of new plastic is now expected to triple by 2060. (3/4)

Today a landmark climate change hearing initiated by small island nations begins at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea @ITLOS_TIDM in Hamburg, Germany.

Read how this case could be a critical step in the fight to curb the climate crisis 🧵

#ITLOSAO #climatechange
The opinion was requested by the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law @cosis_ccil, a group of nine small island states.
The case seeks an advisory opinion on whether carbon dioxide emissions are considered marine pollution, and if so, what obligations countries have to reduce it under existing law.

BREAKING: we’ve filed a legal complaint against England’s environmental watchdog with @wwf_uk for not adequately enforcing regulations designed to protect nature and people’s health from nitrogen pollution.

Why it matters:bit.ly/3Vvq4TY (1/6)
Nitrogen pollution is a little-known driver of climate change and nature loss. Emissions of nitrogen oxide have almost 300 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide, while nitrates are responsible for degradation of almost 70% of sensitive habitats across the UK. (2/6)
A lot of this pollution comes from farms, and the @EnvAgency is required to take action when farmers breach laws designed to prevent it. But we found out through Freedom of Information requests that it has issued sanctions for just 1 in 1,000 breaches in England in 2020/21. (3/6)
