Over late October and early November, military cargo flights in and out of Kaliningrad were at an uncharacteristic high. Bellingcat went to investigate what these flights could be moving using SAR imagery… bellingcat.com/news/2023/11/1…
Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is freely available on a variety of platforms such as Sentinelhub’s EO browser. SAR satellites emit signals onto the ground and create an image based on what is reflected back. They don’t rely on light sources.
In late October, internet users noticed an uptick in Russian military cargo flights. An X user highlighted the anomaly with a graph showing fluctuations in weekly military flights dating back to 2021.
Konrad Muzyka, an independent defence analyst who studies Russia, said it is likely that the increased activity was in connection with the movement of military equipment, but stopped short of saying what equipment it may be.
Bellingcat has found a marked change at certain air defence sites on SAR imagery since the reported cargo flights, indicating that at least some of Russia’s S-400 batteries have indeed been moved from the Kaliningrad Region.
Using a map file of Russian military installations created by X user @Archer83Able, we studied ten air defence radar and missile sites for change in November on Sentinel-1 (S1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery.
From these manual checks, four locations of interest were identified at air defence sites where returns were lower in November 2023 than in the previous month. Overview map used to identify air defence sites of interest for change analysis. Points of interest are marked “Change possible” (Source: Google Earth)
In order to limit the possibility of false negatives, Bellingcat created aggregates from two to four separate days each of before and after imagery to be used for comparison, from this two sites of particular interest became clear.
At one site near Gvardeysk, referred to as location A, points which had previously shown high returns in October appeared indistinguishable from regular noise in November. These points aligned with two radars and a row of launchers of an S-400 air defense system.
Location A. Before – SAR imagery from dates in October 2023
After – Sentinel-1 imagery from dates in November 2023. overlaid on ESRI satellite imagery from March 19 2022.
At another location near the Primorskaya bay, referred to as location B, returns from November appeared significantly lower when compared with October at points associated with launchers and radars in reference imagery.
Location B. Before – SAR imagery from dates in October 2023
After – Sentinel-1 imagery from dates in November 2023. overlaid on ESRI satellite imagery from September 7 2022.
Umbra imagery of the sites were consistent with Sentinel-1 imagery. For location A, points that should've had highly SAR reflective objects were dark.
Location A, ESRI base map from 2022.
Location A, northern battery. Umbra Space SAR imagery
At location B, the results of the imagery were much less conclusive, due to factors including the direction of the satellite and tree coverage. But points where values had dropped in November S1 imagery also appeared dark in Umbra’s imagery.
Location A, southern battery, showing equipment that has remained in the area in Umbra Space SAR imagery compared with ESRI base map from 2022. This shows the ESRI base map.
Location B, Umbra Space SAR imagery compared with ESRI base map from 2022. This shows the Umbra imagery.

Bellingcat’s new financial team can reveal that UK Limited Partnerships have acted as intermediaries for over 17,000 imports into Russia between 24 February 2022 and 31 March 2023, despite stricter sanctions coming into force in September 2022. bellingcat.com/news/2023/11/0…
Experts have long feared that UK Limited Partnerships (LPs) have been used to easily set up unchecked illicit activity on global financial markets. None of the ones Bellingcat found in this investigation, had a controlling partner or persons of significant control in the UK.
The widespread use of these Persons of Significant Control outside of the UK and EU and controlling partners in secrecy jurisdictions makes any meaningful attempt to identify the true beneficial owners of these partnerships all but impossible.

Equatorial Guinea claims to use a luxury yacht for military operations, but why? New Bellingcat researcher @oldpete45 investigates the use and movement of this extravagant vessel: bellingcat.com/news/2023/11/0…
When South African authorities attempted to seize the ship, Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President claimed the luxury yacht Blue Shadow belongs to its Ministry of Defence on X.
Using open source vessel tracking data, along with satellite imagery and publicly available social media posts, Bellingcat has located Blue Shadow at various ports and anchorages in Portugal and Italy since June 2023. Including a trip to sunny Sardinia.

In Northeast Nigeria one young man’s execution-style killing was captured on camera.
Here’s how Bellingcat’s @Mabl2K and @Reuters traced the young man in blue shorts to find out where he was killed bellingcat.com/news/2023/11/0…
Evidenced in a video obtained by @Reuters a young man in blue shorts is forced from a truck by a soldier. He then walks towards two bodies, briefly turns to look back at the camera and then is shot nine times. Audible cheers are then heard.
It was said to be a military operation in Nigeria’s northeast, but neither the exact location nor the date was then known.

When the US Department of Defense published a video seemingly showing a UFO in the Middle East, Bellingcat contributor @NathanPatin and researcher Logan Williams went to work using open-source techniques to verify claims of the unidentified flying object. bellingcat.com/news/2023/10/2…
On July 12, 2022, a US military drone captured video of a metallic, spherical orb flying over the Middle East. The US Department of Defense called it an unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), its preferred term for UFOs.
The declassified footage, captured by an MQ-9 Reaper drone, was partially redacted. No data about the flight were published, not the drone’s altitude, speed or location. The Department of Defense titled the video: “Middle East Object.” dvidshub.net/video/880273/m…

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. We verified footage taken by the militants themselves and recently shared on Telegram to help piece together the events. bellingcat.com/news/2023/10/2…
Hundreds of Israeli civilians were killed in the October 7 attack. As of Friday, Israeli authorities confirmed at least 1,400 deaths in the October 7 attacks. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed more than 3,400 deaths in Gaza.
Both video series analysed were posted on a pro-Israel Telegram channel called South First Responders (SFR). Both appear to have been filmed from wearable cameras, such as a GoPro, worn by militants.
