People sometimes ask me, "Is there anything worse than plastic?" My answer would be, "Of course!" One thing that's definitely worse than plastic is... recycled plastic, as this new study shows. π
Experts believe there may be as many as 13,000 different chemicals involved in the manufacture of plastics, the vast majority of which are totally unknown to us in terms of their safety and potential toxicity.
But plastics can also be contaminated with other chemicals, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals & industrial chemicals, at various stages of their lifecycles. If these contaminated plastics are then recycled, humans can then be exposed to these harmful substances.
Researchers tested plastic pellets from recycling plants in 13 different plants across the world. They found 491 readily identifiable organic compounds, with a further 170 tentatively identified. As you can see from the table below, they span a wide variety of chemical classes.
As well as being harmful to the workers handling them, recycled plastics are also potentially harmful to consumers who use them. Recycled plastics have a wide variety of applications, from toys and furniture to clothing.
Recycled plastic clothing, like these t-shirts from the brand Oceanness, are advertised as the height of ethical consumerism, but in reality if you wear such clothing, you may be exposing your body, through your skin and through inhalation of fibres to some horrible chemicals...
that you wouldn't find in "virgin" plastic.
And look, here are 100% recycled plastic toys for your little ones to chew on all day long...
This new study makes it pretty clear, as far as I can see, that recycling plastic is a bad idea. We already know that recycling produces massive quantities of microplastic waste as well. What we really need to be doing is phasing out our use of plastics, full stop. And now.
BIRTH CONTROL IMPAIRS WOMEN'S ABILITY TO FEEL FEAR.
A worrying new study suggests combined oral contraceptives shrink a region of the brain associated with regulating emotions and processing fear signals. 150+ million women worldwide use oral contraceptives. π
The research is published in the journal Frontiers of Endocrinology. Existing studies had already suggested that oral contraception might tamper with fear processing in women, but more rigorous research was needed. The new study aims to provide this.
The study was small-scale, with around 200 participants, male and female. MRI imaging was used examine the brain and map volume and cortical thickness of particular regions associated with fear processing and emotional control.
Per- and polyfluoro-alkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals", are associated with a substantially increased risk of thyroid cancer (56%) according to a new study. π
As well as being delicious, tea contains a wide variety of plant phenols with wonderous effects, including offering a temporary free testosterone boost, as a study in the journal Steroids reveals. π
One of the ways testosterone is rendered ineffective is through a process called glucuronidation, in which sugar molecules bind to it. The enzyme UGT2B17 is responsible for doing this. Substances that inhibit this enzyme, like diclofenac and ibuprofen can neutralise its effect.
Researchers suspected that polyphenols such as epicatechin and EGCG might have the same effect. These compounds are known to inhibit a variety of enzymes. Maximum levels of these compounds in the body are reached about 2 hours after consuming tea.
Here's another reason to ditch craft beer: more and more brewers are using GMO yeast -- not that they'll tell you. This is yet another instance of food manufacturers sneaking GMO in to the food supply. π
Wired first reported this back in July. More and more craft beer makers in the US are adopting CRISPR-modified yeasts made by a biotech company called Berkeley Yeast. But why?
Because the technology allows them to do things like increase the stability of the flavours in the beer and also add novel flavours like guava, passionfruit, pineapple or "a tropical melange". The modified yeasts can also cut brewing times and prevent certain compounds forming.
FAST FOODS AND PESTICIDES, ANTIBIOTICS AND CONTRACEPTIVES.
In a new independent study of America's 20 top-selling fast-food brands, 100% tested positive for glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup herbicide, and 76% tested positive for other pesticides as well. π
Moms Across America, a nationwide non-profit, had food from the top 20 fast-food brands in America tested for a wide variety of harmful chemicals and substances. Fast food is eaten by 85 million Americans a day, and many of these chains are also suppliers of school lunches.
Glyphosate, on the chemicals tested for, has been linked to a wide array of conditions in humans and animals. Most recently, it's been linked to reduced cognitive development in adolescents after a large-scale study in Ecuador.
This is a crazy new study. Scientists transferred bacteria from the guts of Alzheimer's patients to mice and gave them symptoms of the disease too. Could Alzheimer's be caused by serious gut dysbiosis? π
Alzheimer's patients are known to have a higher abundance of inflammation-promoting species of bacteria in their gut.
Fecal transplants from Alzheimer's patients were given to mice and the mice were then subject to memory testing. The mice that had received the fecal transplants suffered cognitive impairments associated with function of the hippocampus.
