RAREST LOBSTER 🦞 in the world just found—this is “Bowie”—a half male (blue one side), half female (brown other side) Maine lobster with both sex organs. Blue lobsters themselves are only 1 in 2 million, but a split dual-sex lobster that is also half blue is almost unheard of. Locals have nicknamed it “Bowie” for David Bowie. They actually think it can reproduce. Instead of keeping it as a pet, Maine lobsterman Jacob Knowles is keeping it safe in a special large cage with food at three bottom of a harbor, safe from predators & other fishermen. They are looking for a marine sanctuary or ocean science institute (read: not SeaWorld) to adopt Bowie long term. Videos of the saga in thread 🧵 below. I’ve never been so invested in a lobster before, but here we are.

2) Amidst all the darkness in this world, Bowie the bisexual half blue lobster 🦞 is what we need right now.

3) Bowie the bisexual half blue lobster 🦞 has both sex organs folks. They examined it carefully- it’s has a stiff swimmerret on only one side. Jacob Knowles is well known for his lobster fishing videos in Maine. I’m glad he found him.

4) Public poll of the fate of Bowie was people wanted them to keep it as a pet, and the people wanted to name is Bowie. So Jacob’s family built a large cage to keep it safe and still in the ocean.

5) Bowie the non-binary dual sex dual blue/brown lobster 🦞 will be kept in the winter in a safe ocean cage. Jacob’s team will also pair it with some other lobsters to see if can get pregnant and grow any eggs. Jacob will donate Bowie to a science institute later to give a permanent home.

Bowie the bisexual lobster is what we need right now!

6) for those asking what the biological phenomenon that Bowie the half male half female is—called “Bilateral gynandromorph”. It’s been found in many animals. What makes Bowie extra special is it is half blue (already a rarity). Hence extreme double rare.

7) For humans, there is another known (but rare) phenomenon called HUMAN CHIMERA — in which one normal-looking human can have DNA 🧬 of two separate compositions. I.e. one human of fused DNA - fused fraternal zygotes, but **not Siamese**. Blended!

Men are living shorter than ever versus women. Top reason? #COVID19.

Men are less likely to vaccinate, less likely to mask, less willing/slow to see doctors, and also higher biological risk of severe #COVID.

The last one is biological, but others are maybe toxic masculinity. Image
2) “From 2019 to 2021, Covid was the leading contributor to the widening gap in life expectancy between men and women, contributing nearly 40 percent of the difference in years lost.”

Gosh—Did something happen starting around 2020-2023?

“There are more Americans who say they have serious cognitive problems — with remembering, concentrating or making decisions — than at any time in the last 15 years, data from the Census Bureau shows.

The increase started with the pandemic: The number of working-age adults reporting “serious difficulty” thinking has climbed by an estimated one million people.

Lots of people talking about this swing state poll this morning. But caveats that each state poll only n=600, among RVs, not “Likely voters”, and very large numbers of respondents- 16%- DID NOT VOTE in 2020. Plus, of the 16% who did not vote in 2020, half say they will suddenly vote for 2024 for Trump, who has 91 criminal indictments—many likely lead to convictions before November 2024 Election Day. If they didn’t vote in 2020, they will suddenly vote for a convicted criminal in 2024? Reliable? Doubtful.

2) Also, somehow only 18% of those polled thing the economy is doing well. That’s weird. Clearly they are misinformed / under-informed given the record GDP growth posted this past quarter. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Image
3) also every poll has a drift from actual voting results. If you compare the offset (or the “miss”) in the 2020 polls in each state to the actual 2020 results… we are kind in the same place as 2020. Polls have a tough time finding the true mean when polling methods off.

⚠️A Storm Is Gathering Around A CDC Committee — “gross misconduct” complaint against CDC HICPAC.

The Healthcare Infection Control Advisory Committee (HICPAC) of the CDC is revising infection control guidelines for healthcare facilities throughout the country. They have come under considerable criticism from several national advocacy groups over their draft guidelines, which suggest they will weaken protections, particularly for respiratory protection.

Members of the World Health Network @TheWHN looked into the HICPAC’s charter and, as a result, have filed a complaint with the Office of the Inspector General charging Xavier Bacerra, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Mandy Cohen, Director, Centers for Disease Control, and Dr. Alexander Kallen, the lead for HICPAC with gross misconduct.

2) “Kevin Bell, a retired lawyer and member of WHN, explained that the HICPAC committee is in violation of its charter, which requires 14 members; it only has nine. Also, the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) requires that committee memberships be "fairly balanced in terms of the points of view represented and the functions to be performed." The Act adds, “In balancing committee memberships, agencies are expected to consider a cross-section of those directly affected, interested, and qualified.”
Bell said it was striking to him that the committee was not fairly balanced. He said, “I started looking into that first because the committee doesn't have one expert in aerosol science on the committee as a voting member.” It was notable that “these guidelines gave such short shrift to the aerosol transmission of Covid,” which is the primary mode of transmission of Covid-19.

3) “The WHN complaint asserts that because of this violation of its charter’s membership requirements, HICPAC’s formal guidance regarding “Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings” is not considered legally legitimate. Specifically, WHN asserts that to meet FACA, ”the Committee must have in its membership a significant number of experts in fields such as aerosol science, industrial hygiene, UV and HEPA filtration, ventilation engineering, respiratory protection and occupational health and safety. Yet, the Committee does not have even one such member.””

My jaw dropped when I saw student loan rates… So I realized student loan payments due again—I just checked my #studentloan interest rate: 7.76%! And that’s a federal *subsidized* loan. Other friends with private students loans are now paying much more: ➡️15% interest! My god.😢 Image
2) I attended college 2001-2004, and finished my doctorates in 2007. So my loan balances were 15-22 years old. I still once owed over $70k in debt. I can’t imagine how much kids today owe in loan debt 💸… we have honestly failed our kids when they carry 100k-300k in debts.
3) Credit card debt and student loan debt are not the same — you CANNOT compare them. CC debt can be discharged in bankruptcy. Student debt can NEVER EVER be discharged by bankruptcy. ➡️George W Bush WH and GOP Congress codified that “never discharge” of student debt into law.

💡HOPEFUL BETTER TREATMENT—There is a new drug from Japan that is likely a better #COVID treatment than Paxlovid, but FDA is slow-walking the approval. And it’s weird. Ensitrelvir, a drug made by the Osaka-based pharmaceutical company Shionogi, was conditionally approved in Japan last November. Like Paxlovid, ensitrelvir works by blocking an enzyme that the SARS-CoV-2 virus uses to clone itself inside the human body. But for the millions of Americans who will likely get COVID in the coming months, the new drug is almost certain to be out of reach. In 2021, Pfizer waited just **5 weeks** for Paxlovid to receive its emergency use authorization. But #ensitrelvir is still sitting in the FDA approval pipeline, stuck in another round of clinical trials that may run well into 2024.
➡️New data show that people with #COVID19, sold as Xocova in Japan, test negative about 36 hours faster than people who take a placebo. Fever, congestion, sore throat, cough, and fatigue disappear about a day earlier too. Even smell and taste loss appear to resolve more quickly. And early data also show it can improve PASC (aka #LongCOVID). Shameful it’s being held up whenever similar data on Paxlovid allowed it to be EUA approved much faster. Velvet rope / lobbying / Pfizer favoritism?

2) Xocova “looked as good or a little bit better than Paxlovid,” @michaelzlin says. Eg, Pfizer’s clinical trials failed to show that Paxlovid clears symptoms any faster than a placebo in people who aren’t at high risk of developing severe COVID. Xocova did
archive.ph/2023.10.25-191…
3) Reshma Ramachandran, a family physician at Yale, says that if the early Xocova results hold up in additional trials, she’d be inclined to prescribe it to her vaccinated patients in place of Paxlovid, simply because the evidence supporting its use is more direct. She said she’d be especially keen to give Xocova if the long-COVID finding can be reproduced.
