I welcome the deal to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas during its brutal assault against Israel on October 7th.

I'm gratified that these brave souls, who have endured an unspeakable ordeal, will be reunited with their families once this deal is fully implemented.
I thank Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar and President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt for their critical partnership in reaching this deal. And I appreciate Prime Minister Netanyahu's commitment in supporting an extended pause to ensure this deal can be fully carried out.
From the earliest moments of Hamas’s brutal assault — my team and I have worked closely with regional partners to do everything possible to secure the release of our fellow citizens.

Today's deal will bring home more American hostages.
As President, I have no higher priority than ensuring the safety of Americans held hostage around the world.

And I will not stop until they are all released.

For weeks, I've been speaking with Israel’s leaders about the importance of humanitarian pauses in the fighting to get civilians to safety, support the freeing of hostages, and increase the flow of food, water, and medicine into Gaza.

Here's the latest on those conversations:
As of today, there will be two humanitarian passages that will allow people to flee hostile areas in Gaza.

And they’ve already enabled thousands to reach safety.
We’re also doing everything in our power to increase humanitarian supplies and assistance.

There were 96 trucks of supplies two days ago, and 106 trucks yesterday.

But we need to see more, and soon. We are aiming for at least 150 per day, every day.

I vowed to strengthen Medicare for the millions of Americans that have paid into this program from their very first paycheck.

And today, as Medicare open enrollment starts, seniors will see the progress we’ve made lowering health care costs as they choose their 2024 plans.
Thanks to actions we've taken, starting January 1, 2024:

1. Seniors and other Part D enrollees with high drug spending will have their out-of-pocket drug costs capped.
2. Low-income seniors and disabled people will be able to get more help paying for their premiums and cost-sharing through the expanded Extra Help program.

3. And Medicare beneficiaries will continue to save money on $35 insulin and free vaccines.

As we continue to account for the horrors of the terrorist assault against Israel this weekend and the hundreds of civilians murdered, we are seeing the immense scale and reach of this tragedy.

Sadly, we now know that at least 11 American citizens were among those killed. President Joe Biden meets with national security advisers about the situation in Israel after the terrorist attacks by Hamas, Monday, October 9, 2023, in the Treaty Room of the White House.
It’s heart-wrenching.

These families have been torn apart by inexcusable hatred and violence, and my heart goes out to every family impacted.

The pain these families have endured, the enormity of their loss, and the agony of those still awaiting information is unfathomable.
The safety of American citizens is my top priority.

We are still working to confirm but believe it is likely that American citizens may be among those being held by Hamas.

I've directed my team to work with their Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage crisis.

Higher education should be a ticket to the middle-class, not a burden weighing down folks that've been trying to pay their debt for decades.

On Day One, I promised to fix problems in our student loan program that've hurt borrowers.

We’re keeping that promise. Here's the latest:
We’ve already approved over $116 billion in debt cancellation for 3.4 million Americans, no matter how many lawsuits, challenges, or roadblocks Republican elected officials or special interests tried to put in our way.
That includes 804K Americans who got the relief they deserved after we fixed broken Income-Driven Repayment plans; 662K public services workers; 491K folks with total and permanent disability; and 1.3 million borrowers who were cheated by their schools.

For years, student loan borrowers haven't received forgiveness under their Income-Driven Repayment plans despite making payments for over 20 years.

I'm determined to fix it.

Today, thanks to my Administration's actions, 804,000 borrowers will start to see their debt cancelled.
Today’s actions come on top of all we’ve been able to achieve for students and student loan borrowers in the past few years – from attaining the largest increases in Pell Grants in over a decade to fixing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
And, we’re not done.

As I announced in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on our student debt relief plan, we will continue to pursue an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible.
