Israel says that #Palestinians brainwash their children.

But what does Israel teach its own children?

A thread 🧵

1/20

#Palestine #Gaza #WestBank Image
As we'll see, Israeli children are taught 3 things:

1. They can get away with harming #Palestinians, especially if they later serve in the military.

2. Service in the military (which oppresses Palestinians) is a sacred duty.

3. Palestinians are dangerous and primitive.

2/20 Image
Let's start with Israeli schoolbooks and the way they describe Arabs.

One book calls all Arabs "Jew-haters".

In another book, Israel is described as "a lamb", and Arab countries as "wolves":

Israeli schoolbooks often describe #Palestinians as a primitive and dangerous "problem".

In this video, Israeli professor Nurit Peled-Elhanan talks about her research on the issue:

Israeli schoolbooks also legitimize Israeli military action – and even massacre – according to Peled-Elhanan's research:

A few years ago, Israel banned high schools from teaching a novel about a love story between a Palestinian man and an Israeli woman.

Why? Because the book supposedly "threatens Jewish identity":

Image
In Israeli textbooks, the #WestBank (and sometimes #Gaza) are described as part of Israel.

There's almost no mention of the local #Palestinians, or the fact that they live under Israeli military control:

7/20 web.archive.org/web/2022061922…
haokets.org/2017/02/26/%D7…
Image
The result is that many Jewish Israelis support violence and discrimination against #Palestinians (including Palestinian citizens of Israel):

In addition, public schools in Israel are legally required to teach students about the importance of military service.

Israeli law also prohibits schools from hosting talks by organizations that criticize the military:

9/20 nevo.co.il/law_html/law00…
Image
Israeli teachers who've criticized the military – have lost their jobs.

Here are two examples:

In 11th grade, (non-Orthodox) Jewish students in Israel attend a week-long paramilitary camp, known as "Gadna".

They're dressed in military uniform, receive weapons training, and practice shooting.

Image
Some Israeli summer camps also train young children for military service.

For example, one summer camp offers children (as young as 3 years) military-like drills and military history education:

12/20 yediot.co.il/articles/0,734…
Image
In another summer camp, Israeli children aged 10 and above undergo firearms training at a site "similar to #Gaza", and they also use military aircraft simulators:

13/20 calcalist.co.il/local/articles…
Image
There are even Israeli summer camps within military bases.

Children assist soldiers with their chores and are taught by the commanders about battle history:

Image
As a result, most Jewish Israeli children see military service as an important rite of passage into adulthood and full citizenship:

Image
Even before they're born, Israeli children are already treated as future soldiers.

For example, here's an advertisement for the maternity ward of one of the country's top hospitals.

It contains an image of a soldier-like fetus:

Image
Finally, the fact that Israeli youths will serve in the military in the future, can save them from punishment now if they harm #Palestinians.

Let's look at two examples, which I've also written about here:

17/20 cambridge.org/core/books/abs…
Image
In 2017, two Israeli settler youths admitted to throwing stones at Palestinian cars.

But the court didn't convict them - because of "their wish to enlist and serve in a combat unit".

The court added: "A conviction might obstruct [their] recruitment to a combat unit".

18/20 Image
The following year, a 17-year-old Israeli settler admitted to throwing stones at a Palestinian journalist's car and hitting it.

But the Israeli court didn't convict him - because he was enlisted to a military religious program (known as "Hesder"):

Image
Palestinian citizens of Israel (who aren't enlisted to the military) - are usually treated much more harshly.

Not to mention the many Palestinian children from the #WestBank & #Gaza who are imprisoned by Israel, sometimes without charge or trial:

Palestinians are reportedly being raped in Israeli custody.

Israeli forces have a long record of sexually abusing #Palestinians (and others).

A thread 🧵

(Content warning: severe rape & sexual assault)

During a massacre in 1948, Israeli forces raped several #Palestinians.

Documents that were previously available in the Israeli state archive mention "3 rapes", including one of a "14-year-old girl".

2/30 Image
But Israel has hidden some of these previously public documents.

In an interview with @haaretzcom, officials admitted that they deliberately concealed documents to protect Israel’s reputation, discredit critics, and prevent Palestinian unrest:

A court in the U.S. recently commuted the sentence of an Israeli diplomat's son.

Why? Because he's joining the Israeli military.

This reveals a lot about the U.S. and Israeli legal systems.

The Israeli, who lives in Florida, was convicted of intentionally running over a police officer with his motorcycle and causing him incapacitating injuries.

He also has two previous run-ins with the local police:

"I have chosen to serve in the … [Israeli] military. I am looking forward to the … discipline that I will learn".

The #ICJ (International Court of Justice) has just declared the Israeli "occupation" to be illegal.

But this terminology conceals a much worse reality:

Israel's regime of control isn't "occupation". It's "settler colonialism".

A thread 🧵

1/10

#Palestine Image
Under international law, "occupation" is a temporary form of control.

Israel's control over the #WestBank & #Gaza is almost 60 years long. One in 20 Israelis lives in the #WestBank.

That's not "occupation".

2/10 Image
Also, the word "occupation" gives the wrong impression that the #WestBank & #Gaza are separate from Israel.

The truth: For decades, Israel/Palestine has been a single territory, subject to varying degrees of Israeli control.

Israel's export of weapons has now reached an all-time high.

These weapons were tested on #Palestinians.

So, what do we know about Israeli arms export?

A thread 🧵

#Palestine #Gaza #WestBank Image
According to Israel's former Minister of Interior Security, Uzi Landau, "Israel is a laboratory for fighting terror".

The "laboratory" – #Gaza and the #WestBank – enables Israel to develop and test the weapons it later sells to other countries.

The CEO of the Israeli Ministry of Defence recently said:

"Many countries in the world are seeing the success of Israel's arms systems in the war [in #Gaza], … and are buying Israeli weapons to defend their [own] citizens".

Right-wing figure Nigel Farage recently cited on TV "recent surveys saying that 46% of British Muslims support #Hamas".

The mainstream media has repeatedly quoted this false claim – without refuting it.

So here are the facts 🧵

1/8

#Islamophobia Image
As we'll see:

- In the poll that Farage was citing, 72% of British Muslim respondents said they DIDN'T have positive views of Hamas.

- The organization that commissioned the poll has been described as having an "anti-Islam agenda".

- The poll is statistically unreliable.

2/8 Image
So, here's how British Muslim respondents actually described their views of Hamas:

32% - neither positive nor negative
28% - positive
24% - negative
15% - don't know / unfamiliar

In other words, 72% of them DIDN'T have positive views of Hamas.

When #Israel recently assassinated 13 people in Iran's diplomatic building, this was described as an act of "deterrence".

#Iran's retaliation has also been described as an attempt to "restore deterrence".

But what does "deterrence" REALLY do?

A thread 🧵

1/10

#Palestine
Image
Image
A few years ago, I made several arguments about Israel's "deterrence" tactics:

First, acts of deterrence often DON'T prevent national security threats.

Instead, they create GREATER threats.

2/10 Image
For example, if Israel's bombing of the Iranian embassy compound was supposed to deter #Iran, then it achieved the exact OPPOSITE.

Iran's retaliation was unprecedented: launching hundreds of drones and missiles.
