just had the weirdest experience

was watching an X-files episode & there’s this country song playing in the background of the bar they’re in

& it’s so good it jars me out of my idle multitasking to Shazam it

except
Shazam can’t find it

so I look up the lyrics

& all I find from the lyrics are people talking about THIS episode of the X-files from 1998

wut
then I go search for the episode (S6E5 Dreamland II) & apparently I’m not the only one that was like “dang that’s a good song” because it’s mentioned on the IMDB page that nobody can find this silly song

what is happening screenshot from IMDB: Searching for the lost song The song that plays at the UFO bar where Mulder meets his body double. There is a song in the background. Lyrics-"have waited for what seems like a light-year Just to see your face once again, my dear Shining bright like moonlight Sunlight, starlight With big dark eyes that send me out of sight Now I'm staring at the stars... Wondering where you are... Wondering if I'll ever see your face again In my memory you are " Please help me find the song. Considered by all who watch it to be a hidden Gem.
for reference

[ video of a woman walking into a bar & sitting down, looking distressed, while the song referenced plays in the background ]
given how on the nose some of the lyrics are, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t thrown together as incidental music, but that hook is just so good idk idk

the changes first caught my ear because they smack of Queen circa Radio Ga Ga era

he went on to Do Some Stuff, somebody must know him IMDB entry for Jeff Charbonneau, music editor, showing their work on X-files, Homeland, Love, Death, & Robots, Tulsa King, & others
I love imagining that this was accidentally-too-good incidental music 😂

There are people on Reddit saying they’ve been trying to find the song since this episode first aired in 1998 🤯
(that’s roughly a decade pre-Shazam) 🤓
I keep wondering why it is that so many people have looked for *this* song over the years?

It’s not so much country as it is a pop tune in country clothes.

Realized that it’s so up in the mix, & so poignant, that it’s like another character in that scene.
I should also credit the vocal performance of the mystery singer, too: plaintive perfection on top of those warm harmonies + slide guitar is really 🤌
[ I couldn’t find a music supervisor in the credits, so if anyone knows who that is….I only had the end credits to reference at the time - that’s why I included the music editor, perhaps they’d know who the supervisor was ]
I hope the folks that did this work know so many people liked it so much ☺️
but somebody found the cue sheet!!!

[ I may have just purchased this episode so I can pull timestamps to match up w/ durations. It’s a little fuzzy because the music is present in the distant background for some time, but I’m assuming this stuff is covered by a CBA somewhere thus erring on the side of pedantry ]
It’s one of the two last entries, most likely the penultimate

Gonna share their socials in the next tweet

THANK YOU for making this happen & to everyone that contributed
🥹 I just want them to know how much & how many people have enjoyed their work these 25 years 🫶🏻

[ image from previous with alt text ] screenshot of text exchange: “Hii- a tweet went viral of people trying to find a song from x files and it appears you might have written it? https://x.com/laurenancona/status/ 1731903960162701763? s=46&t=zA46P13H6zPcTFzLJVePqg "Staring At The Stars" appears to be the name - not sure if you have any ownership of masters or anything but it seems like a lot of people really want a recording of it to purchase or listen to and I thought you should know :)!” “Thanks, I’m reading through it. Quite impressive. Looking for the song…I know it’s here somewhere”
🥹 less than 24 hours to get here, I love yous so much

🫶🏻

is this real life? how amazing is this? Thank you Dan & Glenn!

[ while we wait to see about a recording, I think ‘we need a country song that could be about people or aliens…in 4 hours’ might be my favorite prompt ever ]

[ also while we wait, that’s Glenn Jordan’s lovely voice you hear on the recording, & he’s on Spotify ]

apparently Word Has Gotten Around 🥰

Screenshot of a text exchange with Frank Spotnitz “This just in from Larold: It’s called Staring at the Stars, by my friends Glenn Jordan and Dan Marfisi I called Glenn & he was listening to it because Dan had just called him!!! Unbelievable.”
I promise you I am not good enough at life to have planned this

Always a good time to thank Jenny McCarthy for being such an enormous anti-autism bigot she almost single-handedly set measles vaccination back years of work after the disease was declared eradicated in 2000
Rich white women will single-handedly ruin decades of public health work, effectively leaving unvaccinated children vulnerable to measles, instead of just accepting their autistic child and that they might themselves be neurodivergent.
That poor child is in their 20s now & she has sworn they were “cured” for years.

I hope they are okay.

Tired of watching people burn out because we don’t talk enough about hyperempathy as a neurodivergence that can be disabling

We have concepts for mirror-touch synesthesia + allostatic load (& analogs)

I don’t know how to frame this yet, but it’s yet another sensory conflict Mirror-touch synesthesia Wikipedia: Mirror-touch synesthesia is a rare condition which causes individuals to experience a similar sensation in the same part or opposite part of the body (such as touch) that another person feels. For example, if someone with this condition were to observe someone touching their cheek, they would feel the same sensation on their own cheek. Synesthesia, in general, is described as a condition in which a concept or sensation causes an individual to experience an additional sensation or concept.[1] Synesthesia is usually a developmental condition; however, rece...
The way normies communicate about empathy includes little nuance, their concepts are based almost entirely on what another person experiences outside of you instead of the internal experience of having empathy, so this whole topic needs more framework for shared understanding
I don’t even think this one is that complicated: people with perception precision dialed up to 11 are processing more streams / bandwidth of input that allow for pattern recognition at more granular levels 🤷🏻‍♀️ & sadly as a result, many / most are also sporting some related trauma

wait you mean there’s already a name for the cost of living around allistics Wikipedia entry for allostatic load: Allostatic load is "the wear and tear on the body" which accumulates as an individual is exposed to repeated or chronic stress. The term was coined by Bruce McEwen and Eliot Stellar in 1993. It represents the physiological consequences of chronic exposure to fluctuating or heightened neural or neuroendocrine response which results from repeated or prolonged chronic stress.
I am UPset

it’s actually been wonderful for those of us that struggle to interact with people that insist on abusing my ears in order to communicate what could easily have been an email

having to talk on the phone sucked

long live text-based comms
it’s okay to say that spoken communication is easier for you and you prefer it

it’s not universal, though, & there’s no reason to be weirdly ableist about who can & cannot speak on demand

& maybe you didn’t know that was ableism, but now you do
you weren’t born in the fire

a bunch of people just didn’t have access to the same types of communication that you did

hey can somebody explain what “active viral replication” means
this is viral replication, apparently illustration of viral replication, spring 5 stages beginning with attachment, penetration, biosynthesis, assembly, & release of new virus critters to run around your body
am I imagining that medics are clenching their jaws & trying not to acknowledge how bad some of this looks

or am I just too much of a layperson to understand

my autism is screaming

I guess it's fine if the thing that finally got me to touch code again (post burnout) is CO2 sensor data 😭
the cPTSD is stronggggg

but this little python package can read right from the nearest Aranet4, pretty rad screenshot of some code from the claranet4 python package running in a terminal. it shows 7 Aranet4 sensors in the proximity, and displays the current sensor readings from the closest one. the values read: co2: 826, temperature: 21.0, pressure: 1008.8, humidity: 46.3.
I just needed to tell somebody that I got a thing working. It's a silly little thing that's a big deal, beause it means my brain can still do a thing it's struggled with since C*vid.

Now I can see my Aranet4 CO2 readings in the toolbar of my Mac 😎 screenshot of the toolbar in MacOS showing text "702ppm CO2", which is being read via bluetooth from an Aranet4 sensor
shoutout to @beconsta for this sweet little Python client for Aranet4, which is running via xbar
