There have been several responses which are best addressed FAQ style. They are parsed as follows:
1. I am a very special driver [for reasons]
2. What about [vulnerable or special class of people]
3. What if I need to [activity]
4. What about [things that do require trucks]
1. You are not a special driver. You are a regular driver responding to very special incentives. DOTs have spent 8 decades prioritizing the comfort, convenience *and even the property* of drivers over the mobility, health, safety & even lives of people on foot, bikes or transit.
2. What about [special populations] The three groups most frequently invoked to defend automobile hegemony, the [working] poor, the disabled and children are also those most directly and substantively harmed—as in endangered, sickened, encumbered, immiserated and killed—by it.
2C. Children. Of all the bullshit reasons to prioritize cars over people, this has to be the worst. Car crashes have been the leading cause of child death, by far, for decades:
2D. What about [police, fire, nurses, healthcare workers, acupuncturists, etc]. Like everyone else, they will make rational decisions given the options and incentives presented to them. There is no reason that any type of employee should receive extraordinary privilege.
3. What if I need to haul 6 horses & a load of hay to midtown Manhattan (they want to see the sights). I grew up on a farm. We did not drive our combine to the grocery store or our hay truck to the dentist. Spending $50K on a truck to haul a couch once every decade is just dumb.
4. What about a semi full of groceries or a truck full of construction materials? Congratulations, you’ve discovered economies of scale. If a large truck delivers $1M worth of goods, $25 is hardly a rounding error. It’s only expensive if you use a truck to haul *one person.*
