10 Incredible Art Deco Skyscrapers 🧵
Art deco skyscrapers are the peak of American architecture. By looking at the top beside the grand entrance, you can see a beautiful wholistic design language unique to each building.
Starting off strong with the one that everyone knows...
Chrysler Building, NYC, 1930
Highrise #136
2. Carbide & Carbon Building
Chicago, IL
Opened 1929
38 Stories
Designed by the Burnham Brothers
Highrise #157
3. General Electric Building
New York City, NY
Opened 1931
50 Stories
Designed by Cross & Cross
Highrise #139
Everyone knows the Chrysler Building, but have you seen these other Art Deco gems in the Northeast? Here are 10 you should know (the last one is my favorite). 🧵
1. Buffalo City Hall
Buffalo, NY 1931
Architect - John Wade
2. The Drake
Philadelphia, PA 1929
Architect - Ritter & Shay
128 of the coolest old skyscraper in the USA. How many do you recognize?
Here is a taste of the detail of each image. They are 8200px tall by 5500px wide. I create them by stitching several drone images together, then stylizing in Photoshop. One day I want to have a gallery where I can print them all 5' tall!
These images are part of an ongoing project called the Highrises Collection. In the end, we hope to document 200 buildings across nearly 70 cities. By the end of this year, we plan to release a coffee table book to put all this work in one place!
After a year of traveling the USA to document historic skyscrapers through high-res drone photography, here are my favorite Art Deco Buildings🧵
1. The Carbide and Carbon Building in Chicago, IL.
This is perhaps my favorite building in the country. The golden spire is so unique, and has captivated me since the day I saw it.
2. Foshay Tower in Minneapolis, MN.
The illuminated "FOSHAY" sign is hard to miss when visiting the Twin Cities. The building was inspired by the Washington Monument, and was commissioned by a con man.
