1/9 Today is the 226th birthday of #Ghalib. Thread on some resources for those wanting to dive deeper beyond the many excellent translations in a lot of languages. Needless to say, a very partial list from the vast scholarship on the man and his work. Please feel free to add.
2/9 Starting with Prof Frances Pritchett's labour of love, A Desertful of Roses where she has commented on every single Urdu verse of Ghalib, published as well as unpublished and collected previous commentators' thoughts too: franpritchett.com/00ghalib/
5/9 Some long lectures by Ustad Ahmad Javaid sb on aspects of his poetry. These are unmissable if you can follow Urdu:

6/9 2 recent book length studies in English: a critical biography by @FarooqiMehr where you can learn a lot about the various editions of his work and his evolution as a poet. And an analysis of key themes as well as poetic evolution by Prof. Gopi Chand Narang (tr Surinder Deol)
7/9 A delightful talk on some verses of Ghalib by the Bollywood actor Kader Khan: tinyurl.com/yc4faj8y
8/9 My own extremely small efforts, a slim volume of contemporary interpretations of some verses in collaboration with Prof Anjum Altaf. And a set of six short podcast episodes from Radio Azim Premji University: azimpremjiuniversity.edu.in/inside-the-bea…
9/9 All the above pertain to his Urdu work. His Persian output is much larger though not as well studied. Here are his Persian verses for those interested: ganjoor.net/ghaleb

1/8 A thread on a term used in #NEP2020 - #lokavidya or peoples' knowledge. It is mentioned in the context of vocational training. It is good to see the term make it into the final policy. But this should be the start of something much bigger.
3/8 Our thesis is that radical, pro-people transformation of society is not possible without challenging knowledge hierarchies and restoring legitimacy to peoples' own knowledge systems.
Important recommendations from Mr. Azim Premji. 1/6 1. Expand MGNREGA: additional allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore, increasing the guaranteed number of days per household and increasing the daily wage. 2. Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme be designed, rolled out.
3. Both these schemes can enable creation of productive assets, including infrastructure and agrarian assets, which will form the backbone of the countries’ economic revival.
4. Serious and sustained Investment in public health will help the campaign against this and future pandemics, and help build up a desperately needed functioning and responsive National Health System in our country.
