I'd been wanting to do this for ages but had to wait for a window of dry weather... Finally, at the end of the winter term, I stood outside my primary school at pick-up time.

I had two DIY air filters behind me, some information on a flyer and a determination to chat.

6yr old and a stray cat "helped" me set up in the playground before all the parents appeared.

On display was one freshly-built new air filter and a dirty one that has been running for 6 months last year in my older son's class. 2 DIY air filters outside a school
And I'd done a serious amount of colouring-in on this sign, which is the main message of our new, small but busy schools action group. Image
I wanted to meet and engage some of the parents in year groups that I don't already know, in talking about the air quality in our kids' classrooms.

I'd printed off copies of our simple Indoor Air Quality Fact File that I could thrust into hands; to pique parents' interest. Image
This will hopefully get displayed on the walls around our school ⬆️

Along with other information about how to manage air quality in a classroom. Image
We've arrived at a weird place in the UK, with the government encouraging us to send our kids to school whilst symptomatic with illness.

But this approach won't improve attendance. It will cause a spiral of sickness amongst children and a depleted teaching workforce. Image
At the end of term, my 10yr old told me this:

"Luke keeps grumbling that other children are coming in to class with sore throats and tummy aches.
That he then picks up and has to have time off with".
By talking to the teacher, requesting windows to open frequently and installing an air filter, I've done my best to improve the air quality of that class.

But if a child is sat right next to someone who is poorly, they will likely be struck down with it too. DIY air filter made with a gym fan
Before 2019, I didn't think about the physical environment that my kids were learning in.

I stupidly assumed that someone important had got that covered. I'm not an Indoor Air Quality expert! What do I know?

Well, how wrong I was.
We've not got it covered. Not at all.

And our government are badly letting down our children's health and education. The buildings are desperate for investment.
Despite feeling semi-silly standing there trying to generate attention and keep half a side-eye on my escape artist child..

My one-person protest was quite successful. I did actually meet and chat with some pupils and several very interested parents.
Some kids came up close and peered at the dirty air filter.

"Ewwwww! Is this in the air in my class? YUCK!" Image
One lady's little daughter has just been diagnosed with asthma and another mum knows a 5yr old who is in cancer treatment and starting at a different school.

Her family are obviously looking to reduce respiratory infection, because this leads to hospitalisation.
Of course I know all about that.

My 2yr old was diagnosed in 2019 with leukaemia. After 3 years of chemotherapy he is now on a limited schedule at our supportive school.

This is chugging away in his rather tight classroom. DIY air filter in a classroom
The UK government don't appear to be actually doing anything to improve the situation for our children.

So it's down to us for now, parents!

Let's talk to head teachers, share information and get building.

With thanks.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before! The local paper is automatically delivered free to thousands of people in my community.

Since it landed on everyone's doormats I've had about ten people wave in the street and holler, " hey, saw your article!"
1/ Image
Even my teenager's mate messaged about it. "Your MUM is in the paper.."
The best bit though is that it's led to contact with Vicky - a national sustainability lead for a major education trust who also lives in my area.

We've had some great chats and it will be interesting to see what progress can be made there.

This was a headscratcher. How do you...

Highlight an issue that isn't well understood
Draw attention to the clean air campaign
Represent this positively
Have a message that makes people curious
In the context of a street art festival?

The central flowing shape is reflective of a mouth - to represent how we breathe in air...
And also how we talk & advocate about air quality, which is illustrated (emerging from inside it) by the child's pinwheel motif. Image
The background pattern is a swirling sixties concentric circles design, to symbolise fan blades whirring round & around.
We chose blue as the dominant colour because it makes most people think of the sky and air.

My friend's mum suffered with severe ME.

I was a student back then and I remember being shocked that she was so poorly, she couldn't attend her daughter's wedding.

She had been a professional dancer...

Her lovely husband cared for her for years.

I was 19yrs old and I'd never heard anything about ME. There is a silence and invisibility swirling around it.
Years later, I spoke with a family-friend who was a GP.

She was incredibly dismissive.
"Oh we run lots of tests on these people and can't find anything wrong with them."

*hushed voice.. "It's all in their heads."

In late November last year, as luck would have it, the UKHSA's national event on air quality was being held in Bristol..

There were substantial childcare issues then, but I mean, just had to find a way to go, right?
🧵 Image
I was chuffed to get a place and be able to attend for two days. (Despite doing a mad cycle across town in inappropriate footwear, to give my littlun his lunch.)

Got a proper name badge and everything. Pic taken at home for lunch because I forgot whilst actually at the event..
Professor Sani Dimitroulopoulou gave a fascinating keynote, introductory speech on the history of Indoor Air Pollution.

According to Max Von Pettenkofer (1818-1902) air is not fit for us to breathe, if the CO2 is over 1000ppm. Image

My partner is an anaesthetist. He took a CO2 monitor into work this week; the air quality inside surgical theatres is probably the best on the planet.

However, other areas of a hospital can have very poor air quality...
1/ Image
Image
The risk of infection is high when you open up people's bodies. So the air must be as pristine as possible.

I listened to a podcast with a hospital designer talking; standard surgical theatres have around 22 air changes per hour.
2/
Theatres with laminar flow can have up to 300 air changes per hour.

This is typically used in orthopaedic surgery. The risk of infection is particularly high when you're putting bits of metal deep inside the body. It's expensive to correct & obviously bad for the patient.

A friend of mine who teaches in a secondary school wants to acknowledge (but has to remain anonymous) that "there's a lot of illness around.. genuine illness".

Their school's attendance officer has openly admitted it this week.
School leaders often feel that they can't trust parents. They usually divert to assuming that if a child is off sick a lot, that the parents are lying.

Especially if this child is known for routinely having low attendance. This is a "sign" according to the NSPCC.
Senior leadership teams feel under pressure.

It's possible for the school to get into trouble over a safeguarding issue.. (if a child was being harmed at home).. which is why they jump to suspicions that parents are making illness up.
