BREAKING: Ohio Gov Mike DeWine has decided to veto the bill passed by the state legislature that would ban pediatric gender-transition treatment. "These are gut wrenching decisions that should be made by parents," he said. The bill appears to have the votes for a veto override. Image
"Were I to sign House Bill 68...Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government, knows better what is medically best for the child than the two people who love that child the most--the parents," Gov Mike DeWine said after vetoing the bill. Image
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said his administration would work on administrative rules to:
1) Ban gender-transition surgery for children
2) Report to relevant agencies data on pediatric gender transition treatment
3) Prevent pop-up gender clinics from providing poor care Image
Gov Mike DeWine said he hoped that his plans for administrative actions would dissuade the Ohio legislature from overriding his veto on the bill banning gender-transition treatment for children. He said his plan in some ways goes further, such as by demanding data gathering. Image

The @AmerAcadPeds's influential journal published a "perspectives" article by pediatricians defending gender-transition treatment from political attacks. @JesseSingal excoriated the essay as one of the "worst offenders" for misrepresenting the science.🧵⬇️ jessesingal.substack.com/p/its-almost-2…
2: @JesseSingal writes of the Pediatrics essay on gender-transition treatment, "remarkable amount of misleading information, including a disheartening number of claims that point, via endnote, to resources that don’t come close to supporting them."

Image
3: @JesseSingal criticizes the Pediatrics essay authors for relying on the 2022 Tordoff et al paper. He has previously demonstrated that the paper's claims that gender-transition treatment lowered suicidality in adolescents are an apparent mirage.

Sued Over Transgender Policies, American Academy of Pediatrics Clamps Down, I report @NewYorkSun. The AAP, which denied the moves were tied to litigation, has pulled its gender-transition-care book and set new rules to limit internal-email exposure. 🧵⬇️

As I previously reported, a woman treated for gender dysphoria with testosterone by Dr. Jason Rafferty, who wrote the @AmerAcadPeds's influential 2018 policy statement on pediatric gender-transition treatment, has sued him, his colleagues and the AAP. 2/
This month, the @AmerAcadPeds has pulled a book it was going to publish Jan 30 about pediatric gender-transition treatment and also ordered members in leadership roles to use personal email accounts for AAP business. 3/ nysun.com/article/sued-o…

Michael Biggs, @LeorSapir and @LisaLittman1 have deconstructed a recent analysis by @Jack_Turban that was said to refute the hypothetical phenomenon of "rapid-onset gender dysphoria." The new analysis, the trio say, indicates that the survey data actually *support* ROGD. 🧵⬇️ link.springer.com/article/10.100…Image
The Turban et al paper analyzed data from a 2015 survey of trans adults and concluded that 59% realized they were trans early in childhood and that a median 14 years passed between that point and their coming out as trans. This, @Jack_Turban et al concluded, refuted ROGD. 2/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36935303/Image
Sapir et al said that the only age group that Turban et al should've looked at to assess whether ROGD might be a real phenomenon was the 18- to 24-year-old group. They are the ones experiencing adolescent during the time period of rapid expansion of trans identification--and a much higher rate of biological girls identifying as trans. 3/Image

Lawsuits by Regretful ‘Detransitioners’ Take Aim at Medical Establishment’s Support for Gender-Transition Treatments for Minors, I report for @NewYorkSun.

Suits filed against 2 of the most prominent MDs in the pediatric field and the @AmerAcadPeds.🧵⬇️

The medical-malpractice lawsuits accuse a team of physicians of egregiously prioritizing two patients' desire for a gender transition over their many severe psychiatric problems. Both presented as suicidal and were sexual assault survivors. 2/ nysun.com/article/lawsui…

One suit names the American Academy of Pediatrics. The AAP's support of medical gender transition of minors, along with practice guidelines by WPATH and the Endocrine Society, serve as the backbone of US medical societies' support of such medicine. 3/

A large survey of transgender adults age 50 and older found that about 26% reported contemplating suicide within the past year. This compares with an estimated 17% of the older general population.

A new paper about Keira Bell, who sued the UK Tavistock clinic over her gender-transition treatment at GIDS, finds the "case documents harms directly arising from the subordination of clinical governance to social and political goals and promoted by poor governance of the boundaries between clinical units like the GIDS and activist organizations like Mermaids."

The authors address the statement often presented by gender clinic providers to parents facing whether to approve medical transition treatment for their child: “Would you rather have a live son or a dead daughter?”

The authors denounce this as “grossly unprofessional.”
