The Senate side of the Capitol was bombed in 1983 to protest US military involvement in Lebanon and Grenada.

Bill Clinton commuted the sentences of two of the offenders in 2001.

The Capitol was also infiltrated and bombed in 1915 and 1971. The Biden admin claim is frankly insulting in its historical illiteracy.

Yes, something has been amiss.

There is zero debate or floor process for any bill, the Senate barely even legislates any more outside of must-pass bills, the committees have become huge and unwieldy which renders committee membership meaningless outside of performative hearing moments, individual senators have no say in the construction of massive pieces of must pass legislation - the contents of which are leaked downtown before Senators are even told. Senators basically have no idea what’s going on, they just show up to rubber stamp nominees 3-5x a week during their 2.5 day workweek where all their food is chewed for them by a handful of leadership staff.

The Senate is the world’s most powerful deliberative body. It is a majestic institution. It is now run like an adult daycare.
I should also add that deliberation - the quality which makes the Senate unique - has been completely subordinated to the political terror of voting. On anything. Everyone is scared of it.
The Senate has also devolved into a body that expects to know absolutely everything that will happen - down to the tiniest detail - if something is brought to the floor. It is completely at odds with the Senate’s nature and rules, which empower the whims of individual Senators to an astounding degree.

Most of them don’t even realize the extent of their own power, which stems from the deliberative and consensus nature of the body. Anything can happen when you bring a bill to the floor due to skill, strategy, political winds, physical capacity, and any other variable. That’s just the majesty of the Senate.

Historical Senates yielded to this and were skillful enough to ride whatever wave was coming at them. Now the tiniest bit of uncertainty cowers everyone back to their corners and carpet squares.
