Medieval man's fascination with death is often framed as a product of the Black Plague, but it went much deeper.

Instead of a symptom of being surrounded by death, it was born out of a surfeit of life; an excess of vitality. Image
Among knights especially, mere life was seen as wasted.

A man of any worth would pursue hardship, battle...

Impossible love, honorable death. Image
We usually ascribe this more to the Japanese because it is outlined more directly in the Hagakure, but chivalric norms were just as obsessed with the fleeting nature of everything in life.

And they were just as focused on death as a necessary part of life. Image
A good death was the capstone to a good life.

Geoffroi de Charny — who quite literally wrote the book on chivalry — was fulfilled only in his dying moments on the field at Poitiers.

That was not mere life, but a life well-used. Image
To medieval people of all strata, life was not meant only to propagate itself, but to be *used* to some beneficial end — either by God directly, or by oneself to further some objective or legacy in service to Him.

There is much to be learned from this.

Life is not something that merely happens, but something that is *given*, with the expectation of honorable and good use. Image
And to the knightly caste, there was nothing more honorable than dying atop one's horse, overwhelmed by the enemy in the throes of combat.

The reason for the battle didn't matter, but good conduct in it did; that in itself was an honorable and good use of one's life. Image

And some still say “people have been getting more attractive, a normal person today would be a 10 in Antiquity”

If anything the opposite is true. Men & women are degenerating rapidly in terms of beauty; see also statues and illustrations made from live models in the 19th c.
“The ancients were ugly!” is just another form of “history was never cool, CHUD”

Even athletic prowess and beauty must be robbed from the past, lest you get any “dangerous” ideas.
In truth human beauty will inevitably decline without explicit movements dedicated to its preservation

The natural state of civilized man is a degeneration of athleticism & beauty. The Greeks, among others, were *exceptional.* Revolutionaries against the ills of civilized life Image

Reductio ad absurdum isn’t a phenomenon, it is a law

Imageboard spergs in 2014 talking about the ill effects of porn eventually becomes some “trad” feminist movement, demonizing men for expecting sex in a relationship
That’s all these histrionics are btw, strange female cartel behavior that in any other light would be instantly legible as 70s feminism; demonization of the male sex drive, elevation of female emotional needs to primary importance, attempts to reinterpret “tradition” to such ends
The neo-morality around sex is more Puritanical than almost any historical example — that’s not even accurate, because the Puritans at least believed in passion within marriage.

We have sterilized and scorned even that. It is seen as evil in some way, exploitative.

Happy Columbus Day! You guys weren’t very good at resisting.

Some battles [1/8]:
At the Battle of Otumba, a battered Spanish army under Cortés faced and defeated over 10,000 Aztec warriors — without artillery.

The conquistadors took the day through daring cavalry charges, routing the massed Aztecs. Juan de Slamanca slayed Matlatzincatl, securing victory. Image
Image
Much is made of Cortés’ Tlaxcalan allies, but few tell the story of how he got them.

The Spanish marched into Tlaxcala and did battle, despite being outnumbered over 100:1.

Those ridiculous odds were just about fair. They fought the Tlaxcalans to a draw — three times in a row! Image

The Left’s entire message to men is “humiliate yourself for our acceptance, which can be revoked at any point”

Male femininity and emotional openness are trumpeted as great things, but the mirage of “acceptance” drops like a rock as soon as they can be used for humiliation.
Being emotionally vulnerable, unmasculine, or even just a little zesty… these are all “REAL CONFIDENT MASCULINITY” until someone identifies themselves as a political enemy

Then suddenly they’re embarrassing again.
The message is, often explicitly, “debase and humiliate yourself or women will not sleep with you”

“Trump gives girls the ick”

“Real men go to therapy”

“Being confident in your sexuality is hot”

It’s so blatantly stupid that I’m surprised it ever gained any ground.

Below is my report from Western NC, on the federal government’s failure to respond to Hurricane Helene.

The information on here can feel like a useless rumor mill — and sometimes it is.

But in this case, social media has been consistently ahead of the curve (and the media).

Western NC looks worse than Ukraine or Syria in many places.

The government is lying about the death toll.

Aid efforts are being held back by pure disorganization.

One interviewee, a contractor, described it as a “total clusterfuck.” Image
Outside of Asheville, FEMA is nowhere to be seen. The National Guard is *barely* there.

Asheville itself is a surreal place. Scenes straight from the Great Depression are juxtaposed against apparent normalcy.

Even in areas with power, violence is a serious threat. Image

Imagine explaining this to your great-great-great-great grandfather. He’d probably beat you to death.
“Practical self-defense advice” is a big flashing sign of our fail-culture; the idea that the “safest course of action” trumps your RIGHT and OBLIGATION to defend honor is absurd.

Imagine saying this to anyone even 40 years ago, much less 400
Every time you think of being “SUED” or “WHAT IF HE HAS A WEAPON?” you are being sexually violated by cultural norms, & you are allowing it to happen. It feels bad because it is bad. That’s why it keeps you up at night. Because it’s cowardice, something you innately know to hate.
