🧵1/3 I was invited to talk about my book on Soviet Jews by @COJECO_NY—a Jewish organization of/for émigrés from the former USSR. My talk was canceled abruptly last week, initially w/o explanation, then claiming that my social media posts on Israel's war in Gaza were the issue.
🧵2/3 I noted my disappointment, asked about any specific posts—but didn't hear back. Since the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct 7, I've posted on ramifications of this tragedy for Israelis & Jews, and on the unfolding horror, filled w/ Israel's likely war crimes, for Palestinians.
🧵3/3 I was told that @COJECO_NY believes in repair as a Jewish value, that they'd be willing to reexamine their "cooperation" w/ me. I refuse, however, to feel at fault as a Jew anguished by the destruction of so many lives in the war that has long exceeded its defensive claims.
