The slogan 'They could have turned Gaza into Singapore' is used by Israel and its supporters to implicitly blame the citizens of Gaza for their own genocide. Let's unpack this statement by asking: Have you ever been to either Gaza or Singapore? A thread 🧵

Before October 7:
Singapore hasn’t been bombarded countless times in the last 10 years. Gaza did.
Singapore controls its own boarders. Gaza do not.
Singapore hasn’t been under occupation since 1967. Gaza has been under ongoing occupation since 1967 ..3

In Singapore you can move freely within the country. Gaza has been under siege for 15 years and, with rare exceptions, couldn’t go in and out of this ‘open air prison’. 40% of the population knows nothing but being denied their right to freedom of movement during their lives ..4

Israel began to restrict movements in and out of Gaza in the 1990s, before Hamas won the election or the Oslo process.
Singapore controls its own population registry. Gaza does not...5

Israel sees any Palestinian who lives in the West Bank, but who is listed as “a Gazan”, under the population registry that it controls, is illegal and can be deported. And can’t go in and out of the West Bank...6

Singapore has an airport. Israel destroyed the radar station and control tower of Gaza airport on 4/12/2001 and the runway on 10/1/2002.
Singapore has a seaport. Gaza does not, and Israel effectively control Gaza’s territorial and economical water with its war ships...7

Singapore controls its own import and export, its tax policies, and economic activities. Its businesspeople are free to decide how, when and with whom to trade. In Gaza, economic activity with the outside world is subject to Israel’s sanctions...8

Singapore controls its own electricity greed. In Gaza, Israel can remotely disconnect the power, and has been doing so rapidly since 2007. Israel also controls fuel import, and has bombarded a number of times the power planet and solar panels... 9

Even before 7/10, people in Gaza had 4-6 hours of electricity a day. Try to run a household, a business or a school without frequent and reliable electricity. Also – no electricity means no functioning water or sewage system. In Singapore, these are not every day scenarios...10

Singapore's tap water quality is considered according to WHO Guidelines as suitable for drinking directly from the tap without any further filtration. In Gaza, prior to 7/10, 97% of the water was contaminated, slowly poisoning the population...11

Singapore controls its electromagnetic spectrum. Israel controls Palestinian electromagnetic spectrum, including in Gaza, and can shut it down whenever it wants. It has done so rapidly, living citizens with no cellular or internet connection, let alone land line. END
