1/ Supporting Ukraine is in the best interest of America. Let me explain: 🧵:
This is a map of NATO (a little outdated. Finland is now in NATO). NATO is a mutual defense organization designed to promote peace and security in Europe.
2/ Article 5 of the NATO charter says, in essence, that if one NATO country is attacked, it’s an attack against all NATO allies. The US is a member of NATO. Don’t deceive yourself into thinking Putin plans to stop at Ukraine.
3/ Those who know Putin well know that, to him, one of the greatest tragedies was the dissolution of the USSR. And he wants to control the former territory.
4/ Right now, with less than 5% of our annual defense budget, the US is helping Ukraine destroy the Russian military (one of our adversaries) and protect against a NATO conflict, without any US boots on the ground.
5/ Now let’s talk about why this is good for the US:
Over half of US aid to Ukraine has gone DIRECTLY into US businesses/the economy.
6/ Why? Because we’re sending Ukraine our old weapons and ammunition, and we’re using those funds to buy newer equipment for our military. A win-win.
7/ So, in sending aid to Ukraine, we’re: 1. Investing billions directly into the US businesses/ the economy 2. Clearing out our old equipment/military stores 3. Replenishing our military stores with modern equipment 4. Destroying one of our adversary militaries 5. Using less than 5% of our annual defense budget 6. Preventing an expansion of the conflict 7. & ALL without US boots on the ground
8/ This isn’t even to mention the global economy. The European and US economies are deeply integrated. If their economies suffer, we’ll feel it too. That could mean food insecurity, financial strain, and rising gas/oil prices. They say when one suffers, we all do, and in the case of globalized markets, it’s true.
9/ So, when I say sending Ukraine additional aid is in the US national security interest, I mean it.

Thank you @POTUS for bringing our people home. Some facts on the Iran prisoner swap 🧵
The US should never leave our people behind. Every Administration, Republican and Democrat, has negotiated these types of deals. 1/4
The $6 billion was already Iran’s money from a Trump-negotiated deal, which allowed countries to purchase Iranian oil in exchange for humanitarian supplies. 2/4
I was in the House gallery when Trump’s incited mob stormed the Capitol. 🧵 1/5
I remember consoling my friend and colleague who had just spoken to her family. I remember telling my fellow members to take off their pins so we couldn’t be identified. My Ranger training kicked in and I remember gripping my pen to use as a weapon if necessary. 2/5
Trump’s third indictment marks another somber and serious day.
In America, nobody is above the law, including a former President, and all are entitled to due process under the law.
As Republicans and Democrats, we can take heart in knowing justice benefits us all. 3/5
As U.S. political, military, and civil society leaders monitor the situation in Russia, a few key questions for all of us to consider over the next few days:
1) If Russia continues to destabilize what will happen with its vast stockpile of weapons, including nuclear? (1/)
2) What humanitarian crises may arise as a result and how should we best support NGOs to provide critical aid?
3) How should we be supporting Russian opposition, independent media, and civil society? (2/)
4) What does this conflict mean for countries that rely on Wagner mercenaries or Russian military to maintain power? And where might other conflicts arise in the weeks and months ahead? (3/)
Let us be clear about what happened today. @realDonaldTrump threatened to send the military to “dominate” protestors, his advisors referred to our streets as the “battlespace,” and he ordered the military to use force on peaceful demonstrators so he could stage a photo op.
I saw real battlefields in Iraq & Afghanistan. I saw what happens when the military is used against protesters. I’ve never wanted to see either here. These are not the actions of a rationale, fit, democratic president. They are the actions of a man who doesn’t respect our values.
Our nation is at a crossroads. We must decide what type of country we will be. Our founders rebelled against a king and placed power in the people themselves. This delicate system has endured because most of our leaders endeavored to put the good of the country above themselves.
