There was nice... coincidence yesterday around 8AM. Baltic jammer was still on and BRIO68 decided to make few loops around Kaliningrad, getting hit by the jammer in process.
We can use this to make some observations about jammer. A long-ish thread.
🧵
When airplanes get impacted by GNSS jammer they report lower NIC and NACp numbers or stop sending coordinates altogether. In that case airplane positions can be calculated using difference in time when data from airplane arrives to several stations or MLAT
During it's loops BRIO flight had both ADSB and MLAT positions. We can assume that MLAT positions (red in picture) are impacted by jammer while ADSB positions (green in picture) are not. Other option is shenenigans by the flight but we know that other planes were impacted as well
Ever since @auonsson posted the impactful picture we all like so much, more and more data leads to believe that jammer is located in Kaliningrad. For example this post plotting line of sight circles for selected flights.
For this reason and my own biases, I will use Baltysk, Kaliningrad as origin of jammer. Please keep in mind that ***it is guesstimation/assumption. ***
Now back to BRIO. It did three loops and first two times the MLAT/ADSB switch happened almost exactly at same place, while third time it was bit off. So far I am not sure why.
By assuming position of jammer as described before, we can estimate direction of jammer at that point in time.
NB: If this is first picture you see, please read rest of thread for explanation and **assumptions**.
