I think people dismissing the idea that Russia would attack a NATO state are woefully clueless. If Russia wins in Ukraine, and gets in Trump a President willing to abandon NATO, Putin will strike NATO. This isn’t a low-probability event, it’s Russia’s explicit goal in Europe.
Every question about the future of European security and the prospect of a world war needs to be understood in this context. This is Russia’s plan, to destroy the West’s collective defence policy and then to conquer territory to rebuild the Russian empire.
The failure of those who do not recognise the threat posed by Russian fascism can not afford to lead to European complacency on this issue. Europe must prepare for war, the consequences of not doing so are too dire to contemplate.
We in the west do not see ourselves as being at war with Russia, but Russia absolutely sees itself as being at war with the west.

If you do not understand this you have no business discussing foreign policy whatsoever.
It doesn’t matter how many losses Russia sustains in Ukraine if they are still able to declare victory. In that scenario, Moscow will believe they have defeated the entire NATO alliance on the battlefield. From that point onwards, Russia will believe themselves to be unstoppable.
It’s 2024 and people are still listening to the same stooges for Russian fascism that predicted Putin would never strike Kyiv, now reassuring them that Russia has already suffered a strategic defeat and that it’s time to concede land for appeasement, ending the hostilities.
That’s a recipe for a third World War. It’s as simple as that. These people want to sleepwalk Europe into the abyss, and without doubt they will argue that we should abandon the Baltic States next.
The line must be drawn here. This far, no further. Ukraine is not just fighting for her own survival, she is fighting for the future freedom of all of our children.

We must stand with Ukraine till victory, no matter the cost. For without victory, there can be no survival.
The same people that told you Ukraine is not worth dying for will be the same people that tell you Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia aren’t worth dying for either.

If we do not stand with our allies now, there will be nobody left to stand with us tomorrow.

My family come from a middle class Sunni district of Beirut that borders Dahiyeh. Our neighbourhood has been effectively under armed Hezbollah control since 2008. They have thugs positioned there with barely concealed weapons, used to threaten, intimidate & suppress local dissent
Even though our neighbourhood is effectively controlled & occupied by Hezbollah (and the SSNP), it is not under their direct control like Dahiyeh is. The state still exists in my family’s neighbourhood. The state does not exist in Dahiyeh. Police cannot even enter the suburb.
I’m not going to entertain the position that I as a Lebanese reporter am not allowed to accurately describe the security situation in my own country for fear of giving the IDF a pretext for assassinations.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has reportedly cancelled his scheduled speech tomorrow on the 3rd anniversary of the Soleimani assassination due to the Israeli assassination of Saleh Al-Arouri in Dahiyeh today.
His last two speeches since October 7th have been heavy on threats and rhetoric while Hezbollah's armed response has been very quiet considering their known capabilities in southern Lebanon.
After taking out Razi Mousavi in Damascus last week & Al-Arouri in Nasrallah's own backyard today, Nasrallah can't afford the public humiliation of a 3rd speech, on Soleimani day of all days, threatening yet again that he & his masters in Tehran will retaliate some day.

It’s been particularly depressing watching certain Arab American influencers cheer this on, knowing full well that they are going to feign shock at the catastrophe they are flirting with when it finally dawns upon them.
And everyone knows I’m one of @mehdirhasan’s loudest critics, but he’s at least out here sounding the alarm while so many are willing Biden to lose in 2024. If Mehdi and I are agreeing on issues, you know things are serious.
Trump literally tried to help Netanyahu annex the West Bank, so when these idiots claim that nothing could be worse than this, they have no fucking idea what they’re talking about. In politics and war, things can always get worse. Always.

This is definitively not the remains of an R9X:
Lots of people falsely claiming an R9X “fires” blades, which it does not do. If you were trying to cause maximum damage, the R9X is the last missile on Earth you would use. In either case, this shell fragment definitely does not belong to an R9X
For the record, here is what an R9X strike looks like, there is no damage to anything in the surrounding area, only the vehicle was targeted, only the vehicle was hit. The blades don’t fly off in different directions, they are part of the missile itself Image

There was no peace deal on offer last year Mehdi, and there’s no peace deal on offer this year. Why are you spouting something that is demonstrably bollocks?
I'm sorry but this stuff is beyond irresponsible. If you're going to talk about imaginary peace deals the very least you should do is state clearly what the terms are, who proposed them and when. Mehdi can't do that, because no such peace deal was ever even proposed.
Russia's terms have always been "we keep everything we took, you recognise it as ours, and we keep our troops here. We reserve the right to invade again"

Ukraine's terms have always been "Russia GTFO of our country"

I can tell you all one place in Europe that definitely has not seen an uptick in antisemitic violence in the last few weeks - Ukraine.

After everything that has been said about this country and her people, I feel like this should be more widely acknowledged.
I’ve been to the masjid and the Islamic cultural centre a couple of times in Kyiv this week too. Not a single thing out of the ordinary to report. Everyone just going about their lives, interrupted only by air raid sirens and Russian drone attacks.
I think when people get angrier about the phrase “Glory to Ukraine” than they do actual pogroms, you know none of this stuff was ever in good faith.

But it needs to be said.
