SO MANY new people here, glad that you're here! I'm Dr. Raven Baxter. I'm a molecular biologist and educator. Rapper, model, fashionista, spicy shenanigan. I believe in the power of accessible science communication, and building community in STEM. There's so much I've done+do 1/
I have a BA and MA focused in molecular biology from @buffalostate. My first job as a drug discovery scientist was across the street from a homeless shelter. It wasn't lost on me that I couldn't share my science with them. I passionately left the lab for an education PhD. 2/
A lot of people didn't believe I could be a scientist or that I belonged in the field. I realized early on that I would have to just be happy with being myself and not focus on what other people thought a scientist "should" be like. "Be your unapologetic self" is my motto 3/
Scientists pivoting to education PhDs is uncommon. I did a PhD in science education throughout the pandemic. In early March 2020, I put my skills to use- remixed Lil Boosie's "Wipe Me Down" to teach COVID prevention. It was applauded + went super viral 4/
Graduated from @UBuffalo and since earned honors for my work in science education, communications, and outreach including @Forbes Under 30, @FortuneMagazine Under 40, @EBONY Power 100, @AAUW Woman of Distinction, @Princeton Distinguished Lecturer 💪🏿etc 5/
I do many things. I make science rap, I do things for TV/film, I teach science to the public. I am involved in driving science education policy. Most of all I am just having a really good ass time and bringing you all in with the fun. Come as you are! 6/
I was in the cover of @people magazine last spring for their "Women Who Give an F" campaign, a great way to describe me. I'm not just a scientist, I'm somebody who cares. I give an F, and I believe many others do, too. My core values are community, authenticity, and advocacy 7/
I have been on ice for about two years-- I haven't done much of any science communication-- that's because I was struck with Long COVID. It took me two years to get back into being able to do things at the capacity that I used to prior to 2022. But I'm coming back swinging 💪🏿🔥8/
I started a nonprofit, @TheScienceHaven, we're dedicated to scientific literacy and access for all. We lead small programs with big impacts-- our Stellar Dreams program will get 100 telescopes and astronomy education to 100 kids across the USA this year 9/ stellardreams.org
I am also in a new role where I will be directing chronic illness education initiatives for a major institution. Very excited about that and the potential for me to get involved in relevant molecular biology research and education! 10/
I am a public speaker and I also work with other scientists and organizations to help them communicate their science (and also on their branding). For example, tomorrow I'm doing a workshop for scientists at the FDA @US_FDA to help them better communicate their science. 11/
There are a ton of other things I could put here but if you follow along, you'll learn not only about me, but the amazing world of science. I have a ton of cool things that I will be able to do now that I am ~recovered from illness. So you don't want to miss out on the fun :) 12/
The SARS-CoV-2 COVID virus is a total a-hole that can suppress our innate AND active immune response. It sets up shop in our tissues, exhausting our T-cells for weeks, months. Which for some has reactivated latent "sleeping" viruses that many of us have. 1/
Anti-viral T cells are a key component of the adaptive immune response and contribute to the elimination of acute infections, restrict the reactivation of latent viral infections, and control viral loads at steady state levels during chronic infections. 2/
Having a lot of exhausted T-cells creates a reduced ability for your body to protect itself, meaning reduced immunity, but I'm reading that some scientists are saying it's a protective mechanism so the body doesn't attack itself. But that leaves room for other shenanigans
So the virus that causes COVID has the ability to hide from your immune system and mutate in different parts of your body. Places like your nervous system, gut, and more. So you'll have a negative PCR test and everything but your body is actually still being EFFED UP, BAD 😭😭
I'm reading these papers and WHEW, this virus is absolutely disrespectful. Like, a complete violation
I was having random dreams about some person since 2008, not a real person. Y'all. The person ended up being real. We met last year and now we're best friends. They just showed me pictures they had been drawing, posted in 2008 🫨 and they exactly match pictures I took in 2012...
I am a molecular biologist, not a quantum physicist but this is really making me develop some ideas in quantum biology and consciousness. Things we don't have the tools to measure or directly observe yet. But super intriguing and now I wanna go deeper than the molecular level 😭
The quantum physicists have pulled up into the chat and shared this with me, y'all are going to have to break this one down en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell%27s_…
Y'all I am on an Ancestry dot com rabbit hole tracing my history back and learning who my grandparents are and I'm at this dude named Oliver Cromwell???? And this dude was WILD. Jaw on the floor. Jaw on theeee floor.
I have NEVER heard of him. I literally traced the family tree straight from my grandma right to him. It just kept going. From what I'm reading on the website, seems like everybody in my family tree was on foolery. His descendants came over to the USA and ACTED A FOOL.
Hold on. This dude's dad Morgan ap Williams is the one who is my grandfather lmao it's looking like Oliver is his great great grandson but I am related to him through this guy's aunt, and I'm still reading all of this stuff. So then that means Oliver is my cousin. Not grandpa.
1/ I haven’t dated since 2015. My stories of re-entering the dating pool are comedy. Went on a date. Awkward small talk. He reached across the table and HIT me, HARD. I said WTF is wrong with you? He said he just killed a HUGE bug on my shoulder. Bug goop EVERYWHERE 😭 I left 😭
2/ Atlanta: A dude called me bougie via text bc he found out I was an AKA 🙄, but HE canceled on our first lunch date last minute because he couldn’t squeeze me in for lunch. He had to “get a mani pedi 💅🏾 for his vacay”. I called him Mr. Bad and Boujee. Never talked to me again.
3/ Texas: first date— people everywhere we went were saying how cute we looked together. He ate it up. 60 minutes into a taco date he sends me pictures of him at work, his bank statements, says he wants a family, buy property together, to marry me. 😭😭 SIR, I do not know you!!
1/ This is the story on how I almost didn't become Raven the Science Maven because a Chief Marketing Officer of a huge science ed company asked me to mask my Blackness. When I was first getting started in science communication, the company reached out to me for a partnership...
2/ The CMO set up a Zoom call with me to further discuss. I was so excited! When the video came on, I learned that he was a Black man, and I was excited to see him working as a higher-up at a science ed company. We're talking and he pulls up my science rap videos on YouTube...
3/ The CMO said that he would NOT present me to his team if I didn't delete my first science rap video. He said his whole family LOVED my music but the company customer base, he then specified: white people, wouldn't take me seriously as a scientific figure. I was "too Black"...
