Circumcision is the only case in which our culture removes a healthy body part as a routine part of medicine.
As I explain in @QueerMajority, the evidence supposedly justifying such an extreme practice is laughable, and it needs to end. queermajority.com/essays-all/was…
You could of course find benefits. Cutting off your arm would have benefits. Imagine we dulled the sense of taste so people wouldn't eat fatty foods, and then used science to say this is a good thing.
The benefit has to be *extreme* to justify such a drastic change to the body.
One might compare circumcision to gender affirming care, but we don't do that to babies! The person has some say in what happens to them. How did we get to the point where we consider the human penis a mistake of evolution?
One study shows that circumcision is tied to a lower rate of urinary tract infections. But you need to slice 111 penises to prevent one infection, most of which are a minor problem. This is not how you make rational tradeoffs.
How did Christians start getting circumcised?
It was to prevent them from touching themselves.
Westerners look down on Muslims mutilating girls because they're afraid they might like sex.
We're not so different after all.
The foreskin exists among practically all mammalian species, which indicates it's doing something important. What is that? I don't know. Burden of proof is on those who think the whole thing is a mistake to prove their case. Again, we don't do this for any other body part.
Thankfully, immigrants are helping us move away from this barbaric practice.
And some states are cutting Medicaid funding, which research shows helps save penises.
This is one public policy area anti-circumcision activists can focus on.
Muslims will argue they have "reasons" for female circumcision too. We dismiss them, not even seeing whether they might have a point here or there. The only reason we don't do the same for male circumcision is because of our cultural bias.

This guy was sued by his own firm for falsely inflating his role as “Head of Macro,” misusing confidential information to promote his own fund, breaching debt obligations, and defaming the firm to investors.
Yes, it's unsurprising that Trump brought him into the party.
He eventually admitted sharing confidential information and paid the costs of the lawsuit.
He called himself "Head of Macro," a position that didn't exist. The company says he was hired as a Research Analyst and then fired for poor performance. Fishback has now reinvented himself as a MAGA influencer.
There's a human preference for light skin. It shows up almost everywhere and predates colonialism. Indians and blacks are the darkest groups Americans are exposed to or interact with in any significant degree.
But blacks, in addition to the historical guilt, have traits many Americans like. They're good at sports, good with women, and charming enough to be actors and entertainers.
US-India relationship is being harmed because Pakistan is more willing to kiss up to Trump, and Modi has too much pride to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize when he didn’t do anything.
Mr. Trump contends that he used trade as leverage to get the two sides to stop fighting. After these enticements and warnings, he said, “all of a sudden they said, ‘I think we will stop’” the fighting.
Ghislaine Maxwell transcripts released! See here for thread on the most interesting parts. 1/n
Ghislaine is asked whether Epstein ever received money from any intelligence agency, including Mossad. She replies that not as far as she knows and she would be surprised if he did.
Epstein started taking testosterone in the late 1990s. But he was not on any other substances.
Man comes to the US from Lebanon. Starts out delivering pizzas, becomes a Nobel winning neuroscientist. Trump freezes his funding, he gets an email from China offering to move his lab “any city, any university I want" with guaranteed funding for 20 years.
How to think about immigration. You should be paranoid about the possibility that the US rejects geniuses. One brilliant entrepreneur can or inventor can carry a lot of dead weight. Almost all immigration is good, but this would be true even if it wasn't. richardhanania.com/p/exchange-wit…
Earlier I discussed Casey Means, Trump's nominee for Surgeon General, and her mystical and quack beliefs.
I've looked into her story about how she left her residency. It's very strange, and indicates that there's something that we don't yet know.
Means says she was in an otolaryngology residency and almost finished, but she instead decided to quit because her surgical residency didn't focus on nutrition enough. Isn't that something she would have known well before 4 years of residency, on top of medical school?
I think the real reason was she was unfit. Look at her cohort. The other two doctors went straight through their residency normally. Means, in contrast, had a one month gap between June-July 2018. I don't know what can explain this, but it indicates something abnormal happened.
