1.. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of Indonesia. Where did the word Bahasa came from? Our own Sanskrit Bhasha! What if I tell you that there are countless Sanskrit words in Bahasa of Indonesia, a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. A 🧵
2.. Sailors and traders from India took Hinduism/Buddhism to Indonesia about 2000 years ago along with Sanskrit language. Indonesia was largely Hindu/Buddhist till the advent of Islam in the 14th century via Arab traders. Religion changed, but not the culture & language.
3.. Pancasila (Sanskrit: Panchsheel or Five Principles) is the five principles on which the Indonesian state is based on: Indonesian nationalism; humanism; democracy; social justice; and belief in one God.
4.. The Pancasila logo is incorporated into the Pancasila Garuda, the national emblem of Indonesia. You would recollect that Garuda is a vahana of Vishnu.
5.. The national emblem also incorporates the national motto: Bhinneka Tungaal Ika. (Unity in Diversity). You can guess that Bhinneka comes from Sanskrit bhinn (different) and ika is one, or unity.
6.. Now let us talk about names. Say, Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. This is derived from Jayakarta. Sanskrit Jaya= victory, krit= accomplished. Victorious deed. A name to mark the capture of the city by Muslim troops from the Portuguese.
7.. Another city, Yogyakarta, was named after Ayodhya, believe it or not! Yogya= Suitable/fit and Karta= Prosper. Or a city fit to prosper, just like Ayodhya!
8.. Sukarno, the 1st president of Indonesia was named after the Mahabharata warrior Karna (Kunti’s eldest son) who was abandoned at birth. Karna joined the Kauravas in the battle against the Pandavas. Sukarno’s father loved the character of Karna & named his son after him. But he took care to prefix a “Su” (=good) to Karna lest his son join the bad guys!
9.. Sukarno’s daughter was called Megawati (Sanskrit: Megh = cloud; daughter of the clouds) Sukarnoputri (putri= daughter; Sukarno’s daughter). Our very own ex CM of Orissa (and the current CM’s father) Biju Patnaik had given her the name.
10.. Biju Patnaik had famously flown Sukarno out of Indonesia to Delhi for a meeting at the behest of Nehru. For this act of bravery, Patnaik was awarded the 'Bhoomi Putra', the highest Indonesian award, rarely granted to a foreigner.

If you have grown up in the days when even a fused light bulb had an “afterlife”, this post is for you! It was the era of incandescent lamps, 25W, 40W, 60W and 100W. I am talking about the 60’s and 70’s. The fluorescent lamp or rod, aka “Mercury” light (Markari in our speak) was rather expensive those days. ..1/10
A fused lamp had to be fixed. The tallest sibling would clamber up a pyramid of table & stools. Carefully removing the bulb from its socket and check if the filament was long enough to be fixed. He would shake the bulb around- a twist here and a rattle there- hoping the broken end of the filament got reattached to the contact wires. There was a sigh of relief if he could manage this. ..2/10
If the bulb was beyond repair, stage 2 now. The black “seal” of the bulb end was carefully removed. Water was filled in the bulb and a creeper plant placed into it. A thread was looped on the pins of the bulb (the ones which held it to the socket during it functional days) and it was suspended on any free nail protruding in living room wall. What a lovely decoration for the drawing room! The plant nearly always the creeper, “money-plant”. An appropriate plant to reflect the aspirations of a middle-class family! ..3/10
Kashmir was a significant centre of Hinduism in the first half of the first millennium. The dominance of Hinduism strengthened when a succession of Hindu dynasties ruled Kashmir, starting from the seventh century, when the Karkota dynasty came to power. King Lalitaditya of the Karkota dynasty was a Shiva worshipper, and it was under his patronage that many grand temples were constructed.
The grandest of these temples is Martand Temple located 7-8 km from Anantnag in South Kashmir. Itis dedicated to Sun God- hence Martand Sun Temple. This was built by Lalitaditya Muktapida in the eighth century. It is located on a high plateau. The grandeur of the 1300 year old temple can still be seen from its remains.
Avantivarman, the first king of the Utpala dynasty, which succeeded the Karkotas, established his capital at Awantipora, where he built two important temples—Avantishwara and Avantiswami temples. These are located close to each other. Awantipora is about 30km Southeast of Srinagar.
A to Z of Romance in Hindi Movies. A fan's tribute to the contribution of Urdu language to Hindi cinema.
Aagosh: In embrace. Gode mein. Persian in origin. Not to be confused with khargosh, which the heroine embraces often, symbolising her higher order (or lower, depending on how you view it) intent whenever she thinks of the hero.....
Aagosh may lead to loss of hosh, depending on the pliant khargosh, the real one of course. Because an agosh may lead to the Hindi awesh (passion). A natural outcome.
One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, Varanasi, Banaras or Kashi. Call it what you will, but chances are that once you are exposed to it you will get hooked to it. As I was way back in 1980 when I entered the gates of BHU, Banaras Hindu University.
Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya, whose statue stands at the BHU gate, the visionary behind the university, begged for funds to construct it. Its foundation was laid on Vasant Panchami day in 1916,
This thread captures vignettes of Varanasi, a city I keep returning to.
Ghats of Varanasi are places to witness life go by. There are a total of 88 ghats, big and small, along the Ganges in Varanasi.
