Yesterday was the 2nd annual National Gathering for Prayer & Repentance, led by Spkr Mike Johnson.
A review of the congressional & Christian leaders who joined him should set alarm bells clanging all over the country about the perilous influence of Christian nationalism. 1/
To review: this event appeared out of nowhere last year on the same day as the Nat'l Prayer Breakfast but held at the Museum of the Bible. @ the helm were 2 men: Tony Perkins, Family Research Council (old school relig. right) & NAR apostle Jim Garlow (new school relig. right). 2/
But then, later on, we learned that Mike Johnson, a no-name member of House leadership who got thrust into the limelight as Speaker, was actually the idea man behind this repentance event.
We have also since learned that Mike Johnson has deep & abiding ties to the New Apostolic Reformation leadership networks, groups that, I argue in my forthcoming book were at the heart of catalyzing & mobilizing Christians for #January6th. 4/
As I wrote about the event last year, the 1st of these gatherings was a truly surreal liturgical recreation of January 6th, with many key Christian leaders & themes of the Capitol Riot strung together as a prayer liturgy. 5/
Now we come to the 2nd of these National Gathering for Prayer & Repentances: It was every bit as odd as the first, & was, if anything, even more evidence of the utter centrality of the New Apostolic Reformation leaders to the new religious right. 6/
The NGPR began with Jim Garlow's wife Rosemary facilitating a sounding of the shofar.
Mind you, the guy blowing the double shofar (that's not a thing!), Robert Weinger, is the same shofar tooter who led that part of the Dec 12, 2020 Jericho March. 7/
The format of the mtng was different panels of pray-ers would come on stage w/ various DC monuments & buildings on the screen behind them.
These panels included guys like Jack Hibbs, a right-wing California Calvary Chapel pastor, who also prayed to convene congress this wk. 8/
These prayer panels were interspersed w/ worship sets led by Alma Rivera, who also did this last year.
Rivera was at the Capitol on January 6, with NAR prophets Cindy Jacobs & Becca Greenwood. It's her voice you hear at the start of this J6 video: 9/ fb.watch/pY9bnpjNWM/
Another call back to the Jericho March was featured speaker Jonathan Cahn, a Messianic rabbi who is ubiquitous in right-wing charismatic circles now.
Then Mike Johnson got up to segue to a time with congressional representatives praying. This included legislators like Greg Steube, notable for recently starting to fly the Christian flag outside his office, & Glenn Grothman, who flies the Appeal to Heaven flag by his office. 11/
Next was a panel of pastors & lawyers (whom Garlow strangely referred to repeatedly as "priests and Levites"), and would you look who it is in the center of the panel? Ché Ahn
Next were prayers for Israel, led by apostle Mario Bramnick, a key NAR Trump advisor. He's also co-convener with Garlow of the Global Prayer for Election Integrity calls that were a core leadership gathering & election-lie transmission space, building toward January 6. 13/
Then was a panel of leaders of prayer mobilization orgs, &, bless my heart, it's NAR prophet Jon Hamill & NAR political apostle extraordinaire Dutch Sheets.
Next NAR prophet Lou Engle got his own segment, using his signature rocking back & forth style to rail against abortion and decree that God was going to miraculously convert tens of thousands of LGBTs (not LGBT people, but LGBTs) to renounce their false sexualities. 15/
Also featured were NAR apostle Dennis Peacocke, who was a major force in bringing dominion theology into the NAR and Michele Bachmann, who most people remember as a right-wing congresswoman but she's actually Garlow's right hand in doing congressional ministry outreach now. 16/
To conclude: here we see the merger of old & new -- the respectable religious right (Perkins & Johnson) w/ more than a dozen congressional reps + the insurgent Independent Charismatics & spiritual warriors of the NAR. 17/
Not only does this signal the cooptation of the prayer industrial complex by truly extremist leaders & NAR apostles, it also shows the creeping influence of anti-democratic theologies & practices among our elected officials. 18/
If the NAR gave us the spirituality of #January6th (see Charismatic Revival Fury & my forthcoming book), the National Gathering for Prayer & Repentance represents the translation of that spirituality into a decorous garb that public officials can wear openly. 19/

Truthfully, the spirituality & theology that gave us the Capitol Riot are even more popular among Amer Xns today than it was then.

Yesterday Trump announced he's nominating Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth's a prominent Fox News personality & veterans advocate, but he also has strong ties to the Christian far right that I've not seen fully exposed yet.
Here's a thread w/ receipts... 1/
1st, what's the Christian far right?
It's a coalition of different Christian social movts bound together by aggressive theologies & (often but not always) white supremacy.
This is the extreme, militant end of the spectrum of what is popularly called "Christian nationalism." 3/
Theologically & socially, there are at least 3 distinct, major strands of the Amer Christian far right today (w/ lots of smaller ones too):
1) Radical Traditionalist Catholic networks & influencers, Opus Dei, etc. -- This is the world of JD Vance. Not my area of expertise. 4/
It's bracing to hear the dauntless words that theological giants used to hold each other to the cause of resisting fascism.
This 1933 letter from Karl Barth to Dietrich Bonhoeffer -- "You are a German & the house of your church is burning" -- summons us to Christian courage. 1/
We don't know whether 2025 will be a 1933. These things can happen fast. Dachau concentration camp was opened in March 1933 -- 2 months after Hitler came to power.
But we do know that's where casual dehumanization & demonization of vulnerable communities leads eventually. 2/
Trump & his regime have already found their "court evangelicals" (h/t @JohnFea1) who will genuflect & offer to bless his every despotic whim & assertion.
Pastors, theologians, Bible professors, & religion scholars: now is the time to find the courage of Barth & Bonhoeffer. 3/
I've tried to approach this election unflinchingly & w/ clear eyes, but this is the absolute worst case scenario.
We're in an epochal shift in American history of the worst sort, &, while it does not spell the absolute end of Amer liberal democracy, MAGA is a fatal illness. 1/
I've been ruminating since last night over this quote from John Adams:
"Remember Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes exhausts & murders itself. There never was a Democracy Yet, that did not commit suicide. It's in vain to Say that Democracy is less vain, less proud... 2/
"less selfish, less ambitious or less avaricious than Aristocracy or Monarchy. It's not true in Fact & no where appears in history. Those Passions are the same in all Men under all forms of Simple Govt, & when unchecked, produce the same Effects of Fraud Violence and Cruelty." 3/
This is a disgusting & unbelievably irresponsible thing for a pastor to post on election day!
Landon Schott is a pastor at Mercy Culture, a hyper-political, charismatic church in the DFW area. Sean Feucht shows up there regularly, & he shared a stage w/ Feucht in DC on 10/26. 1/
If you don't know the reference here, many charismatics have railed for decades against the "spirit of Jezebel" (a demon representing feminism, LGBTQ rights, abortion, etc.) taking over the US.
Here is Schott's wife, Heather, on stage w/ NAR apostle Ché Ahn on 10/12 when he issued his decree that Trump (Jehu) would win & Jezebel (Harris) would be "cast out" -- an unmistakeable reference to Jezebel's execution in 2 Kings 9, the same passage Schott highlights today. 3/
I know Trump's rally at MSG got lots of press attn for its fascistic undertones, but the most fascistic thing to happen this week in Trump world -- in my view -- is this prophecy spoken over Trump by Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn at a relig ldrs event. 1/
You'll need some context to understand what he's saying in this prophecy, but I promise: When you understand the message he's conveying to Trump & to this audience, it's chilling.
1st, who is Jonathan Cahn?
He's mostly likely the most famous Messianic Jew in America today. 2/
Cahn has so many NY Times bestselling books, he's probably 1 of the most-read & most-followed religious figures in the entire U.S., but he's gotten little mainstream media attention.
Excellent (& terrifying) reporting here from @AndyKroll & @mtredden about how Russ Vought, a far-right extremist former OMB director & likely 2nd Trump Admin cabinet member, is thinking about the agenda for Trump 2.0...
Something we must all grasp heading into this election is how much Trump's lies about the 2020 election have become a new "lost cause" narrative, propagandizing & radicalizing many far-right actors to attack democracy in the name of defending the Constitution. 2/
In truth, our civic crisis today rests upon an even deeper & more far-reaching epistemic crisis -- a crisis in how we know what we know.
1/3 of Americans today believe Trump's 2020 lies, & that reality distortion field is warping their very citizenship & view of democracy. 3/
