1. The New York Times has published a 4,500 word opinion piece by Pamela Paul targeting transgender care.

It is filled with inaccuracies, faulty citations, and factually incorrect claims.

Lets dive in.

2. This isn't the first time Paul has hit LGBTQ+ issues - previously, she chided LGBTQ+ people for the word "queer" and argued trans people erase women.

This is her biggest attempt to engage "factually" though.

She fails to do so. Read my article here:

3. Lets look at four of the biggest inaccuracies.

Claim: Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria is making people trans

Fact: Rapid onset gender dysphoria is not a validated theory and has been opposed by over 60 psychological organizations. Image
4. In her citations, she relies on a retracted study by Lisa Littman, and cites a study by Lisa Littman's organizational treasurer to claim that "several researchers" support it.

Here is a letter from 60 psych orgs stating it is not real:

caaps.co/rogd-statement
5. Claim: Stephanie Winn was a trans therapist who was attacked for having a more "considerate" approach to gender dysphoria.

Fact: Stephanie Winn floated treating transgender kids with accupuncture needles to "see if they like needles" to try to get them to desist Image
6. Claim: Trans people might actually "just be gay" and being trans is a form of conversion therapy.

Fact: 75% of trans people identify as L,G,B, or Q AFTER transition. Most trans people hear, "why couldn't you just be gay" from those around them. Even Laverne Cox did! Image
7. And in fact, if trans people are trying to be gay to "escape discrimination," it's a poor choice - studies show significantly higher attitudes towards transgender people.

.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
8. If we are trying to "trans away the gay," clearly something isn't working given how many transgender people fully embrace being gay.
9. Claim: 80% of transgender kids "desist," and various studies show this.

Fact: The real number is 2.5%. The studies cited are from decades old data and criteria that classified feminine gay men and tomboys as "gender disordered." Image
10. I fully explore these claims and more, in depth, with extensive sourcing in my article. This opinion piece, being paraded around as a "factual" review of trans care, is one of the sloppiest pieces I have seen on the New York Times website yet.

Edit: Originally, I stated Paul cites a retracted Littman study. This is corrected to read that Paul cited a separate study, which was ALSO retracted. Littman’s study was removed and republished with a correction that it “does not validate the phenomenon" of ROGD with an apology.

1. Nancy Mace, in an interview, made it clear that her opposition to Sarah McBride in Bathrooms was never about safety.

She stated, "It's offensive that Sarah McBride thinks [she's] my equal."

The audacity of a trans person being her equal.

2. Nancy mace's comments show how attacks on one trans congresswoman in a bathroom were never about her being dangerous, or unsafe. It's about raw hate.

3. In a Newsmax Interview, Mace stated, “It is offensive that a man in a skirt could ever think [she’s] my equal, that his challenges are the same as mine. They’re not. [She’s] forcing [her] genitals into women’s restrooms, into dressing rooms, into locker rooms. It’s sick."

1. On day 1 of prefiling, Republicans have filed 32 anti-trans bills in the state of Texas.

The bills target transgender people with bounties, could shut down Pride parades, ban gender marker changes, and force mass-scale chromosome testing.

2. The latest suite of bills in Texas comes after the largest campaign targeting transgender people in history. Republicans, emboldened by the election results, could press forward with bills considered too extreme in previous years.

3. One bill, Hb1123, seemingly would require that every student athlete in the state of Texas get a chromosome test.

This could have disastrous consequences. Image

1. It was never about sports.

Some have argued that Democrats should give up on trans people in sports.

As a leading transgender journalist covering the issue for years, I can say that this is a strategy doomed to fail.

Here's why.

2. In the wake of Harris loss in the 2024 election, a debate has emerged over trans participation in sports... on whether or not Democrats should abandon "the sports issue."

This is deeply misguided. I explain why in my latest piece.

3. If you had a time machine in 2019 and traveled to 2024, the shift over trans rights in the US would be shocking. In the 2019, trans people could openly access care in all states.

Now... bounties in bathrooms, adults cut off from medical care, and drivers licenses pulled.

There is a push among some orgs, "moderate" legislators, and even trans people to "give up the sports issue" in hopes that will stop hate.

I have watched moderates try this in 23 state houses.

It doesn't work. There's no amount of give you can offer that stops them from taking.
Sports are the foot in the door, the asterisk they offer on our gender identity.

Once you give that up, they then sell you on adding that asterisk to kids...

To birth certificates, because you have to enforce the sports laws.

To bathrooms, which are like locker rooms right?
There are some who wish to do the wrong thing, discriminate against transgender people, for the right reason, stopping future discrimination.

But eventually, doing the wrong thing for the right reason just makes it easier to do the wrong thing.

Governor Andy Beshear, in a Trump +30 state, gives advice to Democrats: Do not throw LGBTQ+ people under the bus, it will not work.

His advice to dems: Lead on your values.

This man ran on a fully inclusive campaign in 2023 and won. He received the same kind of ads Harris did. Image
Just look at this quote here. This man is incredible with his support for trans and queer people. Image
This post is making all of the worst columnists who have been lining up op eds targeting trans people mad.

Some immediate steps I believe that all trans people should take:

- Get your passport. Today. It takes time to come in and this will likely be shut down under Trump.

- Update every ID your state allows you to.

- Make sure you have a supply of medication in case of disruption
- Stay in touch and ACTIVE with your local (LOCAL) LGBTQ+ org and mutual aid groups. This can help with supply disruptions.

- If you are considering moving to a new state, this is a good time to do so. Not everyone wants to or can move, so respect that.
- If you have a trans kid that is stealth, consider maintaining stealth to get around enforcement of anti-trans laws.

- Watch my risk map and newsletter, I'll be tracking the next wave of anti-trans legislation we are sure to see.
